I've heard of some M&P slides failing to receive proper treatment from the factory and becoming rust prone.

Usually rust like that only happens if you sweat on it a lot and don't bother wiping it down with a gun rag. I wipe down my M&P after every day I carry it and have had no rust problems with any of them and I live in a pretty humid, hot environment.

Even though it is made of stainless it can still rust. Handguns are made with a stainless steel alloy that doesn't contain as much chromium as say a kitchen sink and its the steel within the alloy that starts to rust.
If I sweat a lot wearing mine and I don't wipe it down it will start to show surface rust especially where the melonite is worn from my holster.

Interesting!

I carried a Ruger P90 stainless .45 (Uncoated) for 4 Tours as a backup through dust / mud and rain-snow and never touched it other than a bore brush and a dash of CLP and never had a problem. I finally sold the thing a few weeks ago and bought an MP .45

Comes down to quality of the stainless steal. If I remember right 505 SS starters to get good.. I have seen rust start if I put a piece a SS in contact with steal when wet.. I carried Stainless steal colts in SS and 3 gen Smith's and a 66 combat masterpiece in SS with out issue. Sweet never seemed to bother them.. M&P line I don't think is all about quality. It's about low cost guns and high profit to S&W..I'm not saying ther not good guns. The wife and I have a M&P .45 on order! But It's about function fit feel ease of use and functionality in adverse conditions. All at a minimum cost to manufacture. And IMO a limited life span, Not to last 100 or 200+ years. All good for S&W and the public. Yes it seems the S&W M&P should be wiped down. I think if you treat it like a blued gun you will be fine! George

Another good reason to apply wax to the exposed metal surfaces - serves as a moisture barrier to prevent rust.

Dave

Apparently "Stainless Steel" means different things to different people...

In my mind, stainless steel with a melonite finish should be as impervious to rust as the polymer frame.

If you go to the link, in some of the other pictures it appears the rust came from some other source and not the slide.

Edmo,
You are right! The finish should have prevented it all. Even if it was plain steal.. But if the finish gets damaged in any way it won't protect it.. That's where the stainless steal should have come into play.. And still be fine.. I have seen 100 year old guns without that kind of rust! If it was bumped I think I see some Mark on the slide but it's hard to see.. In any case.. I would sent it back to S&W for refinishing. They should make it right and do a fine job! George

Edmo,

The word is stainless not stainproof

I had a similar issue with my M&P9 Pro I had bought. Carried OWB but concealed with a long shirt over it. I treated it no differently than my Glocks but I had surface rust where the holster contacted the slide. I sent it back to Smith and they replaced the slide. I own 4 M&P autos, I carry them in all sorts of weather and conditions, compete with them and haven't had a single occurrence since. Despite all the torture tests out there, the act of carrying, using and sweating on a gun is probably the worst of them all.

I think maybe you need to brush up on your knowledge of metallurgy and chemistry. As long as something has ferrous metal in it, it can and will rust at some point. Some take longer than others.

Wow, looks like that thing was buried in the back yard for a few days just to see what would happen. That's crazy for it to happen through normal carry/use.

Stainless is not RUSTless.

You should be able to clean it off, oil it and carry on. Sinks rust, stainless hand rails rust, everything rusts except gold, and gold is too weak to make a gun barrel from. ;)

So maybe a Glock won't rust as easily, but it's probably weaker than the M&P. I saw a torture test where an M&P went through 65,000 rounds of ammo without a cleaning or anything and still kept going.

I think I'll go check mine....
