Is this a decent price?

I was at the LGS today and something really grabbed my eye. It was an M&P 4.25 inch 40 cal in dark earth. The slide and the grip were both dark earth. It had Trijicon sights on it. I'm not too familiar with night sights but the rear and front were green and under the rear green dots were white dots. Are they new or something? I'm just not familiar.

Anyways, the tag on the gun said $689. Is that totally inflated or a decent price?

I'm in the market for a full size 9mm but if you guys think this is a good deal I might just go grab it and go with 40 cal.

From what I've seen the dark earth sells for the same amount as the black.

The black M&P40 with night sights and three mags is $455.
S&W M&P40 40SW 4 1/4" Night Sights for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $455.00

I guess it's up to you if the color is worth an extra $240 with only two mags.

If you really want a full size 9mm, here's the M&P with no safety, no mag safety and standard sights. 3 mags, free shipping, and they are good to deal with.
S&W M&P9 9mm Fixed Sights 4 1/4" NMS for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $399.00

Keep in mind, you can drop a $65 factory 9mm barrel in a M&P40 and it works just fine.

Probably didnt have trijicon sights, sounds like the what you saw was the M&P40 VTAC. Comes with the VTAC sights. Retails on the S&W web site for $779. I'm not wure what other LGS are selling them for. Sounds like a good price to me. Search the web and see what prices they are going for. REMEMBER, If it says $625 for the same gun, you still might have to pay shipping and FFL transfer fees. That could bring the gun to $750. Just an estimate. I'm not an expert on guns, just on saving myself some cash.http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...57955_757781_757781_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

Thanks for the links man. Let me ask you, are you registered there? I don't like putting all my personal info in just to get a price. Those prices in the link say they are a cash discount and you have to register to see other prices.

I would pay by credit card then wouldn't there be tax, shipping and then my FFL transfer fee?

I know it's bizarre I definitely turned the gun to the side and saw trijicon written on the rear sight on the side. I've went online to try to see if I could find what I looked at in person and the only thing that comes back is that VTAC model.

Sounds like a VTAC model, 689 is a bit high, but the VTACs sell at a premium, 650 is a bit more reasonable IMO. Beautiful, but overpriced as far as I'm concerned, I'll stick with paying 479 for a stock M&P.

Yeah maybe I'll look around. I'll spend a little bit more just to have that color because it looks different. However I don't want to get ripped off. Maybe I'll go back in and look at it again and see exactly what model it is because I know for a fact it said trijicon on the sights.

I've looked online since posting this thread and they are a little bit cheaper, but once you factor in shipping and the FFL transfer fee it's just as much if not a little bit more.

I felt the same way. I very much dislike having to give contact info just to window shop. Use email "[email protected]" and any ID and address you don't like :)

Standard rules apply . . . no sales tax if they do not "do business" in your state . . . and they will only ship to your FFL who *will* charge you a transfer fee. So you will want to factor in shipping costs (if any) and a higher transfer fee than you would be charged if you bought the pistol from your local FFL.

Example . . . my FFL charges $10 for guns bought from him, and $40 for guns bought elsewhere and shipped to him.

It might very well say trijicon on there and be the vtac sights, I believe the tritium for the lower sights (the night sites) is trijicon inserts, but Viking tactical designed the sights. They are nice night sights, without a doubt, and the finish is nice so if you want something different I say go for it. 689 really isn't unreasonable, I just think you can get them down a little more. Bass pro shop or gander mountain would probably try to charge 800 for that gun. Lol

Yeah no doubt about bass pro or gander being through the roof. I'd never buy a gun from them.

The sales guy was showing me the sights and how you could rack the slide in an emergency situation by using the back of the rear sights. I remember they looked very deep as far as being able to really grab on to something with them.

Guess I could always see if they'd be willing to come down especially if I pay cash. If not then oh well.

I bought a couple guns from them in the last few months. They do want 3% if you pay by credit card ($12 on a $400 gun), otherwise they will take a personal check or however you want to do it. I pay no sales tax, shipping is free, and you get a third mag free. I pay $20 to my FFL which is less than sales tax would be. And the free extra mag is worth $30.

So total cost to me for a standard M&P or M&Pc is $419 total, out the door, with three mags. It's a good deal. They ship fast.

I see they just dropped the price of the M&P22 down to $310! I bought mine a couple months ago for $327.

Wow! That's a killer deal. I watched a review on YouTube from the military arms channel which seems to be pretty well respected as far as reviews are concerned. He was saying that the finish on the dark earth seems to wear very quickly and doesn't seem as durable as his black M&P.

I really really like the color especially after seeing it in person. It wouldn't be a daily carry however. I really don't want the finish coming off so quickly though.

I have seen a few guns online with the dark earth frame but a black slide. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm just looking for something a little bit different.

They give that price to swabbies too!! And I would think for under $100 you could have the gun made any color you want... Probably around $50. There's a couple of guys on this board that sent their guns away for fancy finishes that they say are tougher than the original black finish.

Pick up a standard gun for $400 and then have it customized for a lot less than that one you are looking at! ;)

Yeah that is what I am thinking of doing. There is a guy named James from a site called XD-hs2000.com who does tons of work including slide coatings, sites, etc. I think I might just go that route. The frame will be black but I can get the slide a different color I guess that's okay. The thing I really liked about the vtac was the slide and the frame were the same color.

Anyways I think I might go to the route you just suggested. Get a basic black one and then customize it. The cheapest I can find one is $453 on buds Gunshop.com. It is being sold for $448 if you pay by cash check or money order and then $5 dollars for the insurance.

I can get the slide finished in a number of different colors for $55 plus shipping one-way, return shipping is free.

Then if I want to get night sights it's $30 install fee (which includes return shipping ) plus the sights.

The more I talk this out now on the forum the more I have just convinced myself to forget about the VTAC and customize it myself.

So the one at the gun shop is the VTAC model. I just looked at the right side of the rear sights and it said Trijicon when I was at the store the first time.

I think I might keep looking.

You know, I saw a video and I'd realized it does say trijicon on the other side, I'm glad you figured it out. If you have the money, get it. Even if they don't go down to 650, if I wanted it bad enough and couldn't find it cheaper, I'd probably buy. 689 isn't what I'd consider a rip off price, just think you can get it a smidge cheaper. It is a damn good looking gun!

Hmmm, well what to do....what to do?

I looked into getting a black one and then having it custom coated. Shipping would be $132 round trip because you have to do next day air. Im assuming that would maybe void the warranty S&W gives you.

Well, Im not in a huge hurry but I just have an itch to buy a new gun and you know how you have to scratch it sooner then later.

My wife said she didn't really like the color of the VTAC. She said that a black one with the stainless color slide would look better. She's just getting into guns but has never shot one. The more I talk about them and show her them the more she's getting interested in wanting one and actually shooting one which is very cool.

Oh well, guess I'll weigh my options and see. Another thing, the VTAC at the shop was 40cal and I was wanting 9mm.

Nickel boron is a good look, but I like the vtac, reminds me of the little brother to the SCARs, flat dark earth SCARs are a thing of beauty.

A basic black M&P9 is $399 with the third magazine and free shipping. With night sights it is $455. You need to go to Bud's Police Supply and search prices there. You can get LEO pricing as a current or former military member.

My last two guns I used my credit card and skipped the insurance. I paid a few dollars more, but I like the safety in credit cards.

You shouldn't have to pay for overnight if you just ship out the slide and the handle. Take the action out, they aren't coloring that anyway. ;)
