Would you shoot this coyote?

Nope! Yotes are opportunists. Night if it suits them, daylight if they can.

The ones in Death Valley are definitely daylight animals. Might have something to do with there being more tourists around to feed them during the day.:D

My first (and only) nose-to-nose encounter with a coyote came about 10 years ago when I lived in suburban SW CT. I had a 1/2 acre of non-developed wetlands in back of the house, and it was a refuge for lots of critters ... deer, raccoons, possum, fox, and one summer, a breeding pair of coyotes with their pup. I had several cats who spent time outdoors, and were pretty tough street fighters. One afternoon, I heard the cats howling outside and figured they were just scrapping, so I went to the back door to check on things. As I opened the slider, a blur went racing by (one of the cats) with a coyote in pursuit. The coyote stopped and stared at me from a distance of 15' ... It was huge, like a medium sized German Shepard, and much larger than I expected a coyote to be. He was none-to-pleased that I disturbed his lunchtime, and eventually ran off. There were houses in close proximity, so uncorking a rifle shot was out of the question. Afterward I always kept a revolver handy in case old Wile E. came visiting again, or worse, actually caught one of the cats.

That's a light bullet in 6.5. What velocity are you getting?

I have two loads worked up, both using ww brass, wlr primers, the first is 42.0 gr of IMR 3031 that prints 2950 fps with the average group size just over 1" at 100 yds and the other is 46.0 gr of IMR 4064, right at 3000 fps with the groups opening up to about 1 1/2", that is when I do my part with the factory irons. The 29" barrel really helps get those velocities. I love being out at the range and get the old timers coming past to see what I'm shooting. Then you get the range commandos come over trying to tell me that it's a copy of the Springfield, I politely tell them to go back and check their history. Springfield had to pay Mauser for patent infringement, while adding that the mausers were out a good 15 years before the Springfield was designed. Most people won't believe me when I tell them it's a 106 year old rifle.

They have arrived in Iowa big time over the 24 yrs. since I moved here. We lost a cat in '03 almost surely from a 'yote. They are devastating to the pheasant chicks. The DNR must have a special love for 'yotes cuz they never mention them as a factor. I believe it is our duty to snuff as many as possible to restore some balance.

I know guys whose only hunting passion is shooting coyotes.

Passionately hate them... Wiped out two dens near me in the past few years. Only animal that still gets my bloodlust fired up.

I am happy I started this conversation and appreciate the interesting responses but I feel the need to clarify some things.
First, I never shoot a little anything, not deer, bear, rabbits, or game of anykind. I release all the trout I catch regardless of size because I prefer them in the water than the frying pan.
I don't think small coyotes are cute and give them less consideration than any other form of wildlife out there but I do respect their cunning and intelligence. We would be better off without them.
Do I like my cat? Not really but she has survived 9 years around here inspite of the coyotes and is my wifes cat, the dog is mine.
I simply did not feel the need to run for a loaded gun to exterminate the animal. A fifty pound trophy would be a different story.
Thanks

I respect your principles, Sir. However, if in a few weeks your wife is asking "Where's my cat...." ;)

I shoot it every time. I don't hate coyotes but I'm aware they are becoming a big problem. I shoot then see if there is a bounty at the moment.

Coyotes kill and eat dogs, too. In fact, one of their tactics is for a female of the pack that is in heat to lure a male dog away from its yard and humans, and the pack then attacks the dog. They are pack hunters, if you see one, there are more in the immediate vicinity. I don't like killing young animals, either, but coyotes and rattlesnakes are exceptions to that rule.

Coyotes don't make good pets, either. In college, I wrote a newspaper story about a man who owned a pet store.

This guy sold the same coyote about five times to a nightclub owner who kept buying it for his dancers. The girls complained that it tore up their cars and their homes and wardrobes. They always returned it.

That must have been one ugly coyote.

I like your choice of rifles "COYOTEHUNTER", looks just like my Remington 700 VTR in 204 ruger.

It has laid a many down. 22-250 with the bipod and in the other picture with the snow is a Remington model 600 in 222, its short and a good truck gun around the farm.

Mitch, when I lived in South Dakota we shot a few coyotes. You'd often find them slinking along a wind row where we had been shooting doves the evening before looking for the carcasses of cleaned birds or those that the dogs didn't find. I wish I was going back with you....

Same for me as with Drew.
Wish i was going west with you Mitch.
Been on many Prairie Dog shoots out in S.D.
and it is truly the Pheasant capitol of the World.
Good people out there who appreciate the Gun
owners and Hunters.

Chuck

You leave it be and you'll soon wonder where your cat went. They kill about anything they can at near every opportunity. And believe me- one fewer coyote is sand off a beach in loads of areas.
