Homeland Security has ordered 1.4 billion rounds of ammo in the last 6 months. Now they have ordered another 200 million rounds and an acknowledged roughly 175k .308 rounds for snipers.

In case you are confused, HS operates domestically, someone is expecting trouble.

Take the number of people working under the dept of HS and figure out how many rounds per person for training, quals, practice and such and your next complaint is why are these people not getting enough range time to become proficient with their assigned weapons.

I wonder if they are just catching up after ammo prices went sky high. Perhaps they had a moratorium on purchases during that time.

Sounds like they know something that we do not!!

Or sounds like they have no Idea what they are doing. Take the Federal Protective Service. The part of HLs that is in charge of protecting all government buildings and property.

My son is one of the Chief Range Officers (Instructors) for the FPS. He told me they are going back to 9 mm.

I think its a case of one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing.

But I hope the FPS does go to 9mm. I have enough 40 cal brass, I need more 9mm brass.

Wish they'd go to 45s for a while. My supply of NG 45 brass is getting low.

I've done the math, obviously that makes one of us.

There are 230,000 Homeland Security Employees, not agents employees, even using that number, that's roughly 7000 rounds per person.....and I would guess the number of field agents is probably 25% of the employee force. That's 28,000 rounds per agent. So your explanation...Fails....using either number.

No one said anything about "they" getting anyone, the point was what possibility/scenario are they envisioning that requires that many rounds.....?

Awww, com'on guys. And its not like the Gummit has the money to pay for it, real money anyhow. They borrow from China. If its the Red Chinese paying for it, and we get the ammo, I'm not seeing the down side of it at all.

1.4 billion, huh? Where'm I gonna store that? Maybe under the steps and out in the garage.

Anyone know how much a box that'd be? How about .50 cal cans, stacked 5 high, end to end? I didn't see a cost figure, but at 40 cents a round (bulk discount, you know), that looks like $560 Million dollars. Funny, just about what we guaranteed to Solyndra. Wonder if that comes in .50 cal cans or not? Geez, I hope they palletize it.

read a few weeks ago almost the same post. but the army bought alot of 40 cal. ammo. one question someone had was does the army have any 40 cal. weapons? this is only what i read. but yesterday a mgr. and today another mgr. at a different walmart said the warehouses are no longer getting ammo from Federal. he showed me on his hand held CPU. all these contracts, does this suggest ammo will be hard to find?

Homeland Security has a slew of guntoters - Customs and Border Protection, ICE, the Secret Service, TSA, and I"m pretty sure the Coast Guard and some other odds and ends. They also run FLETC, which I'm sure requires trainloads of ammo.

As Gatorfarmer says, these are multi-year contracts and are open-ended, meaning the numbers sited are the max, not the amount actually delivered.

I'm not under Homeland Security, but I am allotted 1,000 rounds per year for my primary handgun (4 quals a year), plus I have to qualify twice a year on my backup handgun, twice a year on my MP-5, and once a year on both the M4 and the 870. I'm also supposed to be getting a .308, which will require plenty of ammo for the initial course and then regular quals with that.

I'm not even SWAT, those guys probably burn twice the ammo I do.

Multiply that by 14,000 guys, then by 4 for a typical multi-year ammo contract. Your tax dollars at work. Then you can add in the academy - each trainee burns about 10,000 rounds of combined pistol, subgun, rifle, and shotgun ammo. There are always multiple classes going through. Thats for ONE agency.

A billion rounds here, a billion rounds there. Pretty soon you're talking about lots of ammo.

Sooo, just who, what is Homeland Security?? (a rhetorical question)

I mean we have the FBI, the NSA, CIA and a multitude of other acronyms.

Click the box in the upper left for the six major items or "mission"

I am glad our boarders are secure and Immigration laws are enforced. Seems they need a lot of ammo for this.

Homeland Security

This is just the facts Mam, no discussion needed.

Sure seems a lot like the FBI:

The number of people under Homeland Security umbrella has already been addressed above and it's still an inordinate amount of rounds per person.
