M&P SHIELD 0.40 CALIBER MAGAZINE DROP PROBLEM POLL

the guy at the gun shop said he hadn't heard of a mag drop problem for about 2 months, he thought they had it fixed, got my hopes up

I sent mine back today. The roll pin keeps backing out. Im also hoping to get an official set of s&w dimpled mags. I want to get my shield checked off to carry as a secondary weapon on duty and off by my agency. Home- modified mags may not fly. S&w dimpled = maybe.

The roll pin backs out more and more every time i push it back in.

Hoping for a satisfactory result.

do they sign the dimple? there is no difference in the home vs shop method, unless they mad a new mag already...

Bought my M&P 40 Shield last week and finally got out to the range to test it. Using WWB 180g FMJ I first used the 6 round mag and the first shot caused the mag to drop and stovepipe. However, I believe it was my big clumsy hands that caused the problem, because 99 rounds later there were no issues whatsoever with either mag. I was very pleased with the gun's performance, accuracy and surprisingly light recoil. However, given all I hear about the mag drop problem and the indeterminate time it may occur, I'm still inclined to send it back for the fix. I don't want to discover the problem just at the moment I need it for defense. And I'm not willing to fix it myself...I think it's important to document problems and repairs with your gun just as you would with operational problems with your car.

Selling Lots of XDS'

Because S&W will not reconize and fix this problem for all 40 cal owners they are selling a lot of Springfield XD'S!
I bought one and love it! Much better customer service and a better gun!

That was the same reason I choose my new carry. With today's Internet, buyers would be foolish not to go to the forums dedicated to the guns they are interested in purchasing. Luckily I found the Springfield forum before making a huge mistake.

Based on all the reports of issues, and because Springfield will not recognize and assembly line fix the many problems with the imported XDs, dealers are selling a lot of USA made Shields. Due to all the XDs issues, as well as the much higher price, XDs demand is down with supply up, as every store has them in stock, where the Shield is still difficult to find. Luckily I waited until I found the Shield, instead of getting one of the many XDs that I came across.

S&W customer service has been great. They had my .40 for only 4 business days. During that time, besides working on the factory acknowledged mag drop issue, they also did some requested trigger work (even though it was better then XDs to begin with), and installed a requested taller front sight for the reloads I use, of course all at no charge.

Good luck with the XDs!
I like the idea of a .45 this size, and may buy one next year, after the current crop of XDs buyers/beta testers has the list of bugs sent in for correction by Springfield to use during normal production in Croatia.

There are drills and skills that can make your gun hit what you point it at.

While this may be the case in some instances, I can tell you with certainty that mine shoots low and to the left. As a former competition shooter, military sharpshooter and a former police officer who out-shot most of the cops in my department, I can't get my Shield to hit the center of a target unless I intentionally aim high and right. It's very consistent - the sights are just off.

Compare that to my 1911 or my Glock 19, where I can cover the hole made by 50 rounds at 15 yards dead center in the black with a pack of cigarettes....

With that said - it's a personal defense gun. Most self-defense shootings occur in less than 15 feet rather than 15 yards, and involve very fast target acquisition. That's why most courses of fire for police department and military handgun qualification include a section of shooting from the hip without using the sights.

Im hoping to get a revised set of mags. But a s&w dimpled mag with a repair order from s&w is what i need as proof that it has been modified by them and in spec. CYA

That might help narrow things down as a possible fix between your numbers and mine.

My 40 mag dropper is

serial # DXY3xxx

spent case dated 08-16-2012

Would be nice to hear that the 9mm setup is working fine in the 40 dropper frame. This would help confirm that the issue all along was the 40 mags, and with S&W adding the mag dimpling to the 40's, makes things even clearer.

I have to agree with you there. It is interesting. Has anyone ordered brand new mags from S&W for the .40? do they come pre dimpled? Or just dimpled when you send the gun in and they are returned?

I have not been able to get out yet again with mine...

Great question! Hadn't thought of it that way since this is one of only a few pistols I own. Am new to shooting and have a Shield40 DXV mag-dropper. Fixed now with the dimples, and the gun is working great. Starting to be really smooth, but also likely also due to me getting better at controlling the gun.

Hadn't even thought about new mags past the 3 I have (sent one back for the fix and got two in return, plus the one that stayed at home), but that is a great question.

I got my Shield back last Monday and have ran through 200+ rounds without 1 magazine drop. The accompanying paper work said they replaced the magazines. Sorry I didn't post my serial - DXV9xx.

I have two magazines on order directly from Smith and Wesson, They are backordered right now but i am told i will have them within the next week. I will Post the results when i recieve them. I am also wondering if they will be dimpled or completely resized mags.

I just got my shield back from S&W and the mag on packing list said new, it wasn't it was dimpled. I marked the one I sent and it was the same one sent back. I also had them put on new sights on because I switched the original to Big Dot that the gunsmith had destoryed them. S&W replaced them at no charge back to the original ones. That was nice of them, however now the slide hangs up by 1/4" when loaded with one in the chamber. Has anyone else had this problem? I think they bent something when they replaced sights, does anyone have any suggestion what could be hanging up? I can gently hit the side of the gun and the slide slides forward back into position. It does not hang up if the gun is unloaded.

S&W never called me, even after I wrote a letter to please call me. They just fixed it (????) and sent back with packing stating what they did. I just got off the phone with S&W rep and I asked while they had my gun, did it have a slide hang up. At first she responded no, after joking around with her on the phone, she then said she was sworn to secretacy, apparently S&W knows their a problem with the magazine. The mag drop is only part of it the other part is the slide reset because the round is not fully chambering. All the reps were issued the 9 mm and 40 S&W and she reported that she would have to hit the back of the slide on range bench to put slide back into position. S&W told her it is a new gun and their would be bugs, but when she questioned them why they don't fix these problems, they told her they are fixing the large mag drop, but the slide reset is not their problem it is the ammo manufacture problem. She told me just lube it up real good and laughed. I don't know about anyone else, I am seriously considering sell both my .40s.

Mine does that every once in a while and I smack the back end of the slide, and it's fine.
I thought I missed lubricating something.
But after seeing your post, now I'm wondering.
I sent mine back for the mag drop issue,
and they replaced the release and dimpled the mags, but nothing with the sights,
(and yes, mine has always shot left of center since day one out of the box).
One other thing, I used to be able to chamber a Snap Cap before I sent it back to S&W,
now, it will not allow the slide to close completely.
Doesn't matter if I hand feed it in to the chamber,
or from the magazine.
Slide stays back about 1/4" and will not go forward.

Ok, that's scarry. NOT THEIR PROBLEM?
The .40S&W caliber of ammunition has been around for a lot longer than the Shield,
and I've never heard of other gun manufacturers having a slide reset issue.
And since it's a S&W caliber (hence the name .40 S&W)
shouldn't they know the specifications of their own ammunition design?

We have Red Jacket Firearms about five minutes from here, I know they build assualt rifles, etc., but he is probably the best gunsmith around. I want him to look at this gun and get his opinion. I will post what he tells me.
