All,
I'm needing a quick price check on a 4" P&R M28-2. SN: N5089xx. Does not have the original grips, just some rubber Pacs. Condition easily 95% +. Would be closer to 99%, but has some blue wear on the right side of the barrel. Case coloars are very good. Target trigger and hammer.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dick. Pretty sure I can get it for $400 OTD.

Interestingly (or not) this is not stamped, "Highway Patrolman" on the barrel. Just the .357 with "CTG" under it and the symbol to the right. Nothing else on the right side of the barrel. On the left side is, "SMITH AND WESSON"

Could someone post a few pictures of the left and right side of the barrel of their 28-2? If 4", all the better.
Thanks!

If you can get it for $400ish, you've got a real good deal. Go grab it quick. ;)

Plan to....................but, the no-"Highway Patrolman" stamp has me nervous.

Here are some pics that I had to lighten up to show the barrel stamps. It's also a 28-2 4" N serial #. Hope it helps.

Very helpful! The one I am looking at is clearly devoid of, "Highway Patrolmen.

Maybe the gun is actually a mis-stamped Mod 27-2, which would have a more highly polished blue finish and a checkered top strap. Mis-stamped model numbers on S&W frames have come up on the forum before.

An N serial number would make it definetly NOT a pre-28, but a late 60's or 70's gun

A model 27 barrel say 357 S&W Magnum on the right side, not .357 CTG

Maybe give S&W a call and ask if they could verify if the gun was re-barreled. Worth a shot.

The "glyph" on the barrel to the right of .357 CTG. was only used on the HP as far as I know. If the barrel was roll marked in two steps, the second step (i.e. marking of HIGHWAY PATROLMAN) was missed during manufacturing. You would think it would be a mistake that would be found during final inspection, but since it doesn't affect the function or safety of the gun it was not considered a critical defect.

It is definitely not rebarreled, blued, etc. It has the appropriate "flat" blue finish and all other markings are 28-2 appropriate. It is still available and I may try and get back over there tomorrow. May decide to trade my "reworked" M10-6 for it.
