I just seen a crawl on my local news of a Brady Bill requiring a 5 day waiting period to purchase handguns. Anyone heard anything about this? I bought a MP 40 back in July. Took all of 30 minutes to decide, register, pay and leave.

Haven't seen that particular crawler, but following the recent election no doubt the grabbers are feeling a bit more optimistic.

I'm sure more of this is to come.

Some states have much longer waiting or application periods now. Some up to 30-45 days.

Used to have one here in PA for handgun purchases. It was touted as a "cooling off" period. They(dealers) also did a sort of background check sending copies of the 'PA Application to Purchase Handgun' a prospective buyer filled out via the mail to local/county/state "Agents of the Law". They would call to halt the sale/delivery if there was a problem. It was dropped for awhile if ya had a LTCF.

But rifles and shotguns were always simply cash & carry!

Now we use the instant-check system.

Might make sense for a first time gun buyer , but most of us probably have anywhere from 1 to 100 handguns already!

More post-election hysteria. Gun stores are out in full force spreading the "Obama is going to ban AR's" propaganda in an effort to sell more guns.

I think in the long run, it wont happen and there is going to be an bubble on AR and AK type guns, and prices will come down!

Says the guy who seems to vote for anti-gun politicians, yet seemingly owns guns...

After reviewing nipsters past posts, I see nothing to corroborate your allegation. I do however, understand his position. It is always in the interest of the industry to have some sort of crisis or bogeyman to keep the masses riled up and buying guns, ammo and components. As if we need some special reason. While I value the 2A as much as anyone, there are other important issues to consider as well. Of course, living in AZ I have very few worries regarding the 2A.

Which gun stores are doing this? Can you refer please? I'd hate for there to be misinformation regarding legalities. Links?

I believe Iowa has a "cooling" off period if you do not have a permit to carry or acquire.

Makes it harder to go to wally world buy a gun a box of shells and find that cheating spouse all in the same day : p

If I recall my research properly, the original draft of the Brady Bill mandated a 5 day waiting period alongside a paper background check conducted by local law enforcement for all new firearm purchases.

The NRA successfully lobbied to have the 5 day waiting period jettisoned in favor of the current instant background system we know and 'love'.

As far as the "hysteria" goes, time will tell. We have 4 more years to see if the naysayers were right. For what its worth , i'd rather be called Chicken Little then indulge in complacency with the resulting consequence to our national heritage:

Dicks in Citrus Park, Tampa, FL, the entire "shoot straight" franchise in Central Florida, Gander Mountain in Ocala, I could go on...

I am shocked you all dont hear it more. Go to a gun show and just about every vendor is doing it.

Of course they dont advertise or put it in print, all word of mouth.

Dicks near me has a policy of no more than 6 boxes of ammo per day

Do you mean and believe the Brady Center does not still actively work to restrict gun ownership?
The OP's topic is a 5 day wait he saw a news crawler about. You switched it to an AR ban. Are you saying he did not see that?

Of course they do. But the Brady Center is not a government organization, does not and can not make policy. They are the left's version of the anti-NRA

The OP's post quite honestly is baseless political bait. I guess I was a sucker and took the bait. Probably should not have

I've been to a number of gun shops lately, haven't seen any advertising to that effect.
So let's see : "of course they don't advertise or put it in print..."
Not much in the way of evidence.

So you infer that the OP didn't see a crawler that he thought referred to a five day federal wait? And he just made it up?Honestly, he asked a question. An answer to his question would be more appropriate. Not everyone wants to start an argument.

pretty straightfoward question

4 more days to go for an answer :D

"Quite honestly" I wasn't politically baiting anyone, merely asking a question on what my local morning news crawl was running. As I stated, this was news to me since I had no waiting period back in July. To infer that my post was anything more than a simple question is incorrect. SD.

The board of directors of the Brady Center is full of anti-gun Senators , State Reps and lower level politicos.

They may not be an official "Dept of ----" , but they're as close as it gets.

Be lucky you do not live in the people republic of NYS.

First off if you're lucky enough to live in a county that is not totally anti gun after jumping through a bunch of hoops you might get a permit to carry a pistol. (That carry permit is needed to even posses a handgun in your home.) The state permits are administered through the counties and in some places even though you have a CARRY the judge might put restrictions on it.(Bad restrictions)

Now that you have your permit let's say you want to get another gun, you go to the dealer and purchase it. He gives you the serial number and you fill out a bunch of paper go to county clerk pay a fee and turn it in. It has to be signed by a judge every time you buy or sell a gun. That could take only a few days till a couple of months. Then after its signed you get a post card to come down get your amendment and then go back to the gun shop and get your new gun. I would be happy with only a five day wait!
