I see reference to many different manufacturers, loads, fps, etc for 22LR ammo. I see some referred to as mini-mags or similar names. It's becoming a blur when I am out shopping for 22 LR ammo.

For you guys who have put a thousand rounds or more through your 15-22, what ammo have you had good results with?

What have you used for 1.) target practice, 2) varmint hunting, 3.) tactical "replication" ?

Maybe list your favortie 3 brands, price/round and where you bought them?

Maybe list the one(s) you definitely don't recommend, and why?

Thanks for taking us to school with you!

My vote is for Federal Classic, available in 525 round boxes for about $17 (I buy 5,250 rounds delivered for $169). WalMart has their own packaging with 550 rounds, I believe. These are copper washed/plated 36 grain hollow point rounds. I really don't like or prefer hollow point for target use, but they're pretty good. Blazer 40 grain lead are suggested by many, although I prefer a copper plated bullet to the lead only. CCI Tactical are 40 grain copper plated rounds specifically designed for the 15-22 rifle, but I've experienced more feeding and ejection problems with those that the others. Most everyone (including S&W) says not to use Remington Golden Bullets, but some don't appear to have a problem with them. Some of the best ammo is CCI Mini-Mags, but they're quite a bit more expensive than the bulk ammos.

I would try some of the ones mentioned in you owner's manual that have been shown to work well. Then, what ever works, stick with it.

Personally I use the Aquila varieties mentioned.

Ammunition

First of all you need to try different ammunition in your MP 15-22
each gun is different, for me the two loads that work the best are.

1. CCI Velocitor 1435 FPS 40 gr. copper plated HP.
2. Federal American eagle 1260 FPS 38 gr Copper Plated HP

I hope this helps.

As a new 15-22 owner myself, this is where I've spent most of my time on the forum, it's the "Notable Thread Index", lots of good information on several topics: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-15-22/166153-notable-thread-index.html

The 4th topic from the top is "Ammo Talk" http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-15-22/146665-ammo-talk.html

Remington Golden Box will steal your wife and kill your dog.

I don't care for it.

I don't really use a specific ammo for one purpose. Everything I shoot with a .22lr will die no matter how fancy or expensive the ammo is. If I think a hollow point is going to make or break the kill, I get a bigger rifle.

I use Blazer bulk and CCI tactical the most in my 15-22. I can't recall ever having an issue with them. The CCI tactical is a little more accurate from a well rested shot. I just pick a few boxes up when I'm at a store that has a decent price on it.

I've fired over a thousand rounds of Winchester X without a problem.
I'm also using Federal Champion and Spitfire and CCI mini mags. I've also had no problems with these but only several hundred rounds each.

I did some cost per round comparisons today at my local Gander Mtn, where I buy the majority of my ammo and these are the current costs.
Winchester $18 per box of 333 = 5.4cents per round
Federal Champion $22 per box of 525 = 4.2cents per round
Federal Spitfire $4 per box of 50 = 8cents per round...ugh
CCI mini mags $7.50 per box of 100 = 7.5cents per round

I've had no problems with any of this ammo but as has been said each rifle is different and there seems to be accuracy differences between them as well.
Try some of them all and choose what you like the best.
I do notice that the CCI mini mags seem to be the most accurate at 50 and 100 yards thru my gun.
These are the current Gander prices. I've seen them lower, especially the Federal 525's. And for the money they are the most inexpensive to use.

CCI Blazer

I have seen many people recommend CCI Blazer bulk pack. It was just on sale at Dick's last week, 525 rounds for $18.98. I have run these rounds in the 15-22 with zero issues.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks...

I went for a box of 525 CCI AR Tactical at LGS for $22.99, and ordered 2100 Federal Value Pack w/ a free dry ammo box for $84.99 including free shipping from Cabelas.com.

I am interested in trying other brands and loads, for test purposes, maybe a box of 50 at a time. For example, I'd like to keep a box of CCI Stingers on hand. I wish Hornaday made 22LR, but that's not gonna happen...

I have always seen the .22lr as, more or less, a very inexpensive (read cheap) way to shoot. While I expect decent accuracy, I am not expecting more than combat effective hits. With this view in mind I have never seen any reason to purchase ammo other than in bulk packs since that is way I usually shoot. I consider myself very lucky because all of my .22's like Federal bulk, and they shoot it with very acceptable accuracy. I have 7k+ rounds through my 15-22 alone, with only a couple of issues that were most likely gun related.

After all of that I say find the cheapest, most reliable and accurate ammo you can and keep shooting and having fun.

I usually use CCI-Tactical or Win M-22 in either of my 15-22s. but CCI-MM, Fed 550 bulk, and Fed AutoMatch work pretty well. In my PC model I will not use Fed Champion because I have found it is slightly longer than Fed 550 bulk and has caused some feeding and jamming issues. The PC model has a tighter and shorter match chamber than the regular 15-22s.

Everything CCI works great for me. My understanding has been, and my experience has reinforced, that lower speed heavier rounds are more accurate. The velocitors and the stingers are very powerful but seem to fluctuate in flight more than the mini mag and such.

Where can I get the 5250 rounds for $169 delivered? Thats a deal I would like to take advantage of. Thanks...Larry

It's all good

I've put somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500 rounds through my 15-22 in the past couple of weeks, at least 325 of each of the following w/ no FTF, FTE, or misfires (except one from a bulk pack of Federal AutoMatch) when using S&W magazines:

Aguila Super Extra
CCI AR Tactical
CCI Mini Mag
Federal AutoMatch
Federal Bulk
Winchester Super X

Also put a 50 box of Federal Champion through w/o issues

It's hard to say definitively what's the most accurate for me as I'm not the steadiest, but I think at 25-50 yards I've consistently had the tightest groups using the CCI AR Tactical so far. The Aguila has been nice as well. The Federal Bulk boxes are definitely a good deal if you can find them consistently. I do like the way the Mini Mags and Super X sound and feel slightly more than the rest though. They seem to have a little more oomph.

I've only been shooting at paper from a bench, standing, or kneeling so far.

I use only CCI tactical 22 in my 15-22. They work every time.
