That was a very interesting article, one which I found myself agreeing with.

Perhaps one of the final paragraphs states it best for me...

"I believe that individual citizens are sovereign, not because of a grant of authority by the state, but because of a grant of authority by God. The state therefore does not have the right to confiscate the firearms of the people, precisely because the state did not make the original grant of sovereignty to the people."

Thanks Andrew, I did enjoy it. I also book marked it and will pass it onto some friends. Articles like this, well written and articulate, are the best rebuttal to those who would abolish the 2nd A.

Gary North is a religious man (Catholic I believe) so that paragraph fits very naturally into his work. I am not very religious, but that does not mean I do not respect the views of others on this matter, nor does it preclude me from believing that my sovereignty come about simply from my birth. Also, keep in mind that the founding generation were largely deists. They believed in God as the Creator, but they did not believe in a living God that was constantly looking out for mankind, etc...(I don't want this to turn into a religious discussion. I am merely pointing out some details for clarity.)

The main point is that sovereignty is not granted by the State (any institution of government). This idea is relatively new (late 17th century) and is a pillar of the Liberal (not modern progressive, statist liberal...) tradition. As Gary North noted, prior to that time period the rights of the people were granted by the Monarchs who in turn used to proclaim that they derived their power directly from God.
