I have a couple of questions about 4013 TSW Tactical models.
Does the mid production series MSE1xxx lack the equipment rail and the front strap checkering? Or do all TSW's have those options? Were the MSE series manufactured as a matched slide and frame as some other TSW were?

Thanks in advance!

My 4013TSW is serial #MSE5XXX and did not have the rail. I am not sure what year they started putting the rail on.

Thanks that's a start, there is alot of confusion from the threads I searched and my Standard Catalog does not give crystal clear info. If I am reading the text correctly it shold not have a rail, as far as the match machining and checkering goes it looks as if the 2000 and up productions do.
The shop that has one is not open today and before I head over there I figured I check here. :)

I feel like I should give my Shorty Forty less time in the holster and get it's little brother for carry use. A 4013 with no rail will feel at home in my Milt Sparks VM2 holster.

More 4013TSW

MSF71XX checking in, with no rail/MIM hammer and trigger. Matched slide/frame. Very accurate and easier to handle (recoil wise) than expected. An great 3rd GEN! After owning a couple other 40s, I was worried that this gun might be uncomfortable to shoot, but wanted one anyway as I have 3913, and 4513 model pistols, as well. Sorry I waited as this pistol is a very nice shooter!

if the 40xx TSWs are like the other TSWs then the early first year or second year productions were the only ones that did not have rails. The latter models which they made more of all have them. Do not know if you could order them with or without rails as a LEO purchase but the rails all became standard on all later model TSWs regardless of serial number. That is why you do not see very many non rail TSWs around.

my 3913TSW has the same MSE serial number and has the front strap checkering. Made in 1996 sold in 1997 so that makes it early production like the rest of non rail TSWs.

MSF1xxx here, front strapping-no rail. Didn't know what MSF stood for kinda cool!

Directly from an e-mail I sent to S&W a few years ago:

The 4013TSW "Tactical" from 1997-99 while the 4013TSW ".40 Tactical Smith & Wesson" from 2000 to 2006.

We don't know who or what possible dealers would have on their shelf.

Regards, Paul

Note that the 97-99 production does not have the rail. From 2000-06, they did have the rail.

Well, I'm a little confused, I have a .40 Tactical Smith &Wesson with front checkering and no rail with serial number that starts with TDMXXXXX

Is it laser etched ".40 Tactical Smith & Wesson"? Did someone remove the rail? Can you post a photo?

I've found that most TDM prefix guns were form LE orders, or overuns from those orders.

There were also runs of late model TSW pistols made without that stupid rail too. One is in my holster as I type this. A TDU prefix, 7-shot 4513TSW. I've also seen rail free 4013TSW, 5903TSW, 4566TSW and 4563TSW guns.

The SCSW is an excellent reference, but is far from all encompassing in regards to the S&W 3rd generation semi auto's. Regards 18DAI
