M&Ps coming this month!

Just got the memo. The LASD will be trading in our 92Fs for M&P 9mms. They will be issued with night sights, 5 magazines, a surefire X300 Ultra and duty holster. It will probably take a while for all of us to get them but I can't wait!

LA Sheriff's Department? Wow, that is a huge success for S&W, and a good choice for the department. The 9mm part is a little bit of a surprise (not to restart the 9 vs 40 vs 45 debate!) but it has its adherents and I am sure it proved itself in the Berettas.

Kind of sad to see the beretta go away, though. That was THE 9MM to have in the 80's and 90's. Why 5 mags? Never heard of that. Most deptartments issue 3. One in the gun and 2 on the belt. Still, I'm glad Glock didn't get it.

The memo said we have the option to get two extra free of charge so if they offer them, heck I'm taking them. I'm sure it's going to take a while for everyone to switch to them but we shall see. I took my new (personal) M&P 9mm out for the first time to the range yesterday and it felt great in the hands. It was a lot easier to shoot then our 92Fs. It's very easy to get back on target. It was a blast to shoot. But I'll go out on a limb and say the 92 is more accurate. Maybe I'm still getting used to the M&P but I'm looking forward to the transition.

I know a guy in Mich that has a sig 220 duty gun, and carries 4 mags on belt...

I think guys used to strap on the least amount of gear and nowadays, do the opposite.

We do only carry two in the pouch...but some guys do throw an extra one in the back...maybe they are giving them to us to facilitate practice...I run the mobile range and I keep 4 extra 92 mags with me so the guys don't have to unload their duty mags, then reload them...that becomes a bit of a pain.

BTW, deputies can keep their 92s for duty if they want to and the dept. will give them a light...but since the gun doesn't have a rail, it will be one of those light holsters that clips onto the trigger guard with a pressure switch on the grip...and the deputy will have to purchase a duty holster for it...since the holster is over a hundred bucks, i think most will just make the change.....and as of now, they don't make a holster for the Beretta with the X300 so they would have to continue using their gun with no light......and if you ever seen anyone shoot with a flashlight in the other hand, you'd know how much harder that is, so I think even guys who like their Berettas, will make the switch...

Which mobile range do you work at? I've yet to have someone have extra mags so we don't have to unload our duty ammo. Thanks really nice of you to do that. I usually choose between MCJ, Walnut or Industry.

But this month you have to unload them anyway for the ammo exchange....

After the NH shootout, i think you Cali guys would agree, there is never enough ammo on the belt.

I think the Mp is a great choice over the berreta. The berreta is big and chunky for people with small hands and in general oversized for the cartridge it fires. And ya get 2 extra rounds to boot with the MP

Are they going to option the MP9c for Plain clothes and Det?

I'm a noobe here and just curious if your new M&P's will have the thumb safety or not? I just ordered one with and have to wait a couple of weeks (I hope no longer) to get it with safety. All of my guns have safety's and just feel better with it.

Lucky!!!!! My Dept (Florida) makes us carry the Glock 22 .40 and I have never liked it. The Sheriff's Dept we share jurisdiction with switched to the M&P40. I carry the M&P9 FS off duty though. In my opinion should be Officers choice. Especially when at Quals last month two of our Officers who are good for nothing but cover fire immediately improved accuracy when I handed them my M&P.

A lot of great f.s. 9's out there. The M&P is certainly one of the better players so I fully understand the Smith choice.

Just wondering however, was there any conversation in your dept. to switch to a different caliber? And what was the rationale for keeping the 9mm over say .40 or .45?

I know why I prefer shooting and carrying 9mm's but would like to hear the LASD perspective.

You're welcome Kozmic...I'm sure money is a factor (9 is cheaper than 40) then again, we do allow 45s and the dept. supplies practice ammo. A better guess is that the 9 is easier to shoot accurately. When Beverly Hills was using our range a few years back, 40s were all the rage, and I noticed a surprising number of .40 shooters not doing as well as the 9 shooters....personally, I like the 9 better too..

Speaking of carrying lots of mags when on duty. I ran into a AZ, Maricopa Sherriff's deputy on a elevator at a local shopping center. I did notice he had at least 4 mags on. I asked him "My you are carrying a lot of mags" his reply "Not really, I'm only carrying about 60 rounds of 9mm, one day it might not be enough".

To the lame person yeah it might look like too much. But honestly 60 rounds ain't much when SHTF.

The Milwaukee PD switched to M&P40s from Glock 22s about 4-5 years ago My son graduated from the academy in January & was issued a brand new one & the whole department is getting new ones. There ought to be 2000 used M&P40s available soon. Since the officers are being given a choice to buy their old M&Ps many will opt to do that I'm sure.

My son really likes the M&P. He went through about 3000 rounds of cheap Blazer at the academy without any failures. He likes it even better than his personal Glock 21 & 23. Maybe I can convince him to give them back to me. I gave them to him when I retired from armed security & before WI had a concealed carry law. Been kicking myself ever since, lol.

My guess is price, and it is American made, parts avialability. And did I mention price, and it is a great pistol. Has every bit the track record of the Glock, and is not as bulky. M&P is just a solid side arm.

Lucky dog you! I still have to shoot the army's crappy worn out berettas! lol I personally own a M&P 9 and love it. I also just picked up a .40 shield and love it too. In fact, I sold my Gen 4 Glock 19 to get the shield. Cant say I regret it at all! I was at the range today and the LGS had a M&P 40c. Once it hit my hand it went to the top of my "must have" list!
