Wow is that one of the talo exclusive 3" guns?
I had no idea they came with unfluted cylinders, I might be needing one of those, have you shot it yet, I would like a range report on that one
Thanks for posting
I just saw that you come from the mother land, have you been to the factory

From the research I've done, it's a rsr distributer exclusive. It's product code 163409. I believe it was also called a trail boss. I will for sure give a report when I get her to the range! I was originally looking for a 2 5/8 pc 629, but I'm much happier with this!

You guys are sneaking an awful lot of 629-x's in on this thread. Here is my 629;

DSCN0027.jpg

Looks like a nice 6" gun, the no dashes have been hit or miss in this thread, I haven't gone through and counted but can remember at least 3 or 4 posts with P&R guns, let's face it they weren't offered for very long and it was along time ago, I cherish my no dash 8 3/8" and consider it the crown jewel in my small collection of smiths. I would love to have a 4" no dash, but I haven't seen one for sale in along time and probably couldn't afford it, if I did...lol
Thanks for posting yours

This thread is wonderful. I don't have pictures to post but my favorite .44Mag is a 629-2 with a 3"bbl and a round butt. It is a pleasure to carry and it shoots to the same POI (at 25yds) with my reduced loads or full power loads. It is possibly the most accurate revolver I have ever shot. It is my hunting and woods walking friend and it rides in an El Paso Saddlery variation of a Tom Three Persons holster. I also have a M29-2 with a 6 1/2" bbl that used to do the back up hunting and woods walking chores and still maintained the beautiful polished blue even after being exposed to rain, snow and dirt. It shoots very well but is not as easy to carry as the 629. I would like to find a 4" in either 29 or 629. The .44Mag. is probably my favorite revolver cartridge to shoot. You can load it "wild or mild" and it will do the job.

Hope you don't mind me bringing this up now, I guess I really didn't read it the first time, I have found the same thing with regards to point of impact, the 4" guns all seem to behave the same, mid range and full bore loads shoot close enough to the point of aim. That seems to not be the case with my longer barreled guns. I was wondering how your 6.5" gun acted. I agree with you, this thread is wonderful and now that its slowed down a little, I'd like to go through it and ask questions about some of the more interesting guns .
Thanks for any additional info

Which model DX do you have and what is the date on your test target, I totally agree with you on the fit and finish of these DX guns, it definitely seems like they took their time on them

Mine is a Classic DX, manufacture date is the 251st day of 1995 (whatever that is) and the target date is 09/08/1995.

Thank you, so it looks like sometime between 93-95 is when they shortened the range to 25 yds,I still think the DX's models are some of the finest 629's ever produced. Whether they where targeted at 25 or 50 yds, I like them all
Thanks again for your posts, I really appreciate them

WOW outstanding guns in this club. At the urging of jughed and cwh44300 I will apply for membership:D

Spent many hours with a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag and my brothers S&W 29 back in the 80's.
The Ruger has been gone for a number of years (house robbery).

Been keeping an eye out at the gun shows as it was time to replace and get back with the 44 mag crowd.

Last week I picked up a pair

Scruffy 629 no dash with 8 3/8" barrel. Ressessed cyl but no pin. Maybe the dirtiest gun I ever purchased but it is fairly tight with factory stocks, box, documentation and tools. Best deal at the show in my mind.
This one will get a full polish with the clean up.

Next was the 629-1 3 inch barrel. Required 2 gun shows and 8 days to make up my mind. Either I am lucky or the gun was so high priced that everyone else passed. :p

Great fun any way you look at it and kudos to all who have shared their 629's

your in, great find, those are two you dont often see at the LGS, your scruffy 8.375" is very interesting, would you mind sharing the first part of the serial number, the reason I ask is this 4" gun thats stamped 6291,its pinned but not recessed and its S# is N872xxx, by the way I doubt any member here would think it looks scruffy, thanks for any info and thanks for posting here

S&W 629-1 Effector

I was asked to post my new purchase in the 629 Club...you guys have some nice revolvers. Wow I have a long way to go, but I guess you've got to start somewhere. Here is my recent purchase. It is a 629-1 3" barreled 44 with what I understand to be a K frame grip. On the left side of the barrel is written Effector. I believe it could be a Jovino custom job but I will write S&W to find out for sure. I purchased it for $440 and have shot it once but have yet to do any serious accuracy work with it. Just now learning about S&W revolvers. I have a pile of polymer pistols which are great in the same way a Eastwing hammer is great but these revolvers truly are works of art that I will look forward to passing on.

What a find, save your money it is a jovino. A truly great custom gun, if you look closely at it you might find more then just being kbutted, it should have an extra ball detent in the yoke, chamfered charge holes that may be numbered and a super smooth action, I also think the triggers where smoothed and the hammers bobbed, there may have been other things done, I'm for sure not an expert but I do know I want one. It is easily worth 2 times what you paid, maybe the experts will chime in on this one, now that's how you start a collection... lol, Thanks for posting

CWH44300 Scruffy's SN# is N880xxx. Interesting point on the P&R I have three other guns (2 38's and a 45 colt) that have pins with non recessed cylinders. I was suprised to see the recessed cylinder on this gun

That 4" of yours is nice. What wood is used for the stocks do you know?

Nice catch, you stole that gun. The Jovino Effector guns were different from his other chop jobs because he only shortened the barrel to 3" so it retained the full length guide rod and factory locking mechanism. The shorter barrels had the locking mechanism removed so they required a crane ball detent to lock the cylinder in place. As you've figured out, the grips frame has been rounded and reduced to K/L size and I would guess that the hammer and trigger have been recontoured. It probably has an great action as well. Those are sought after old school customs by one of the great revolver custom houses, that gun is probably worth at least 3x what you paid for it. You need to post more/better pics for us to drool over.

Thanks for the info and the compliment, they are pretty close in numbers, there's a member with a 4" gun set up like yours, I'm pretty sure his numbers are very close to yours, my stocks are the ones it left the factory with and I'm pretty sure they are goncalo alves

Cool idea for a thread... I have a few Smith .44 mags that I like, though I will admit that I don't shoot them much these days (not a lot of utility for my needs at present).

I'm very partial to the grounded feel and drop-dead elegant beauty of the 29

29-2_L8454.jpg

the handy practicality of the 629 MG

and the 3" 629 (Lew Horton Special) is just a rude, snubby, BRUISER! ;-)
