NYS Politicians make 3rd Mistake

Someone told me that the politicians in NY have, or are going to limit NYPD cops to mags that only hold seven rounds. As crazy as all this gun control stuff can get I cannot imagine this is true. Does anyone know an NYPD cop or can otherwise confirm that this is complete nonsense? NYPD coppers would have sounded off long before now if it was.

I spent 28+ years in that wonderful organization and retired recently. Whoever told you that is grossly misinformed.

By LAW they are NOW limited to seven rounds, since there is currently no LEO exemption. The Cuomo junta has just decided to illegally not hold them to it.

Again, some are bent on creating a caste system wherever they can, and won't hesitate to violate the laws of their own making to do so.

The seven round requirement doesn't go into effect until 4/15/13 and the Governor and AG have already articulated an active LEO exemption.

You have to give me all of your guns for free.

There, I've just "articulated" a duty on your part to give me all of your guns... which has every bit as much force of law as Cuomo's ILLEGAL refusal to enforce the law as written.

The last time I checked, even New York didn't have rule by decree... YET.

As already noted, his illegal "Fuehrerbefehl" is in furtherance of maintenance of a caste system within the state of New York with cops above mere citizens, rather like samurai over farmers in feudal Japan. No swords for the peasants...

And lest there be any ambiguity regarding my position, currently employed cops have no more need for regular capacity magazines or semi-automatic rifles than any other citizen does.

If you want to live under a caste system, move to India. Don't try to create one here.

I'm certainly not in favor of any caste system and I hope that reason will eventually prevail. Many law enforcement officials and agencies have registered thoughtful objections to those many provisions of the law that impact law abiding private citizens like you and me. Let's hope that the efforts of fine lawmakers like Steve McLaughlin and Kathy Marchione in NY State will bear fruit and that our 2nd amendment freedoms will remain intact.

If they couldn't stop the bill from passing, I have no idea what it is they could do NOW, apart from somehow blocking the bill from being amended to allow ANY LEO exemption.

Is there any possibility of THAT happening?

If not, what is it they could actually DO?

I certainly feel and share your frustration. I'm banking on the fact that protests have arisen from quarters of the population the politicians expected to readily embrace the NY legislation. My experience has been that law enforcement abhors any law that is clearly unenforceable and is clearly incapable of achieving whatever "public good" purportedly motivates it. Additionally, the true intent of the law is clear to all but the most obtuse and has galvanized and motivated many previously silent participants in this drama to speak up in defense of the Constitution.

But again, my question is: "Is there ANY chance of a LEGISLATIVE solution?"

If the legislature voted FOR it, I don't see one.

Is it possible that the legislature could be prevented from enacting the LEO exemption, by filibuster or other means?

Your ONLY other option is the "Chicago" option of protracted litigation. If so, come back in about five years and let us know what happens.

Quote; "even the troopers who helped craft the law."

Does anyone else have a problem with this?

Why is Law Enforcement "crafting" laws?

BigCityChief - It's nice to know you're among the LEOs who oppose NYs insidious new law on the grounds of principle, but I think cmort is right. Unless you protest vocally and speak up on behalf of everybody, private citizen and LEO alike, or perhaps even show solidarity by insisting upon using the same 7 round magazines that the public has to use, the Governor and his ilk aren't going to listen or care. You have to push back and push back hard. Hard enough to create a backlash that'll have Andy unable to sleep at night and wondering if his efforts were really worth it in the end. This will ultimately drum up more signatures for Kathy Marchione's petition and make NY legislators' jobs easier when it comes to repealing this asinine law.
