What would be a good home defense round for my model 39-2 "vintage" hand gun. I started to buy a box of +p rounds today but decided against it until further research.

Here's some words of advice I wish I knew two years ago.

Buy several boxes of these....

After following this two-step process, you won't care what's loaded in the gun. Because you can put it where you need to when the flag flies. Stopping power is defined as your skill level in hitting the target, not the shape of the bullet or what magic powder is in the case.

I bought mine in 1975. I would not use the +P ammo in it.

If I were going to use it for defense I would certainly get some of the 124 gr or the 148 gr ammo.

The manufacturers are making some good hollow point rounds these days that feed nicely in self-loaders.

Why that thing isn't even broke in good yet!!!

No problem,I'll take care of this.

Send that 39-2 to Silversmok3, priority mail please to Rapid City , South Dakota, stat. That weapon must be function tested for safety and reliability, as we here at S&W forum cannot well recommend a weapon without testing it first.

As such ill have to retain it for an extended period of time to ensure absolute reliability in accordance with this webpage's very high standards. Due to current ammunition shortages, testing may take approximately 12 months to complete.

No no...send it to Yankton, SD..we'll turn it around in less time::)) Seriously, the 39-2 is an excellent pistola. One of the best feeling in the hand pistols I've experienced. Enjoy it...

Well, I'll put in my 2 cents worth..... I would suggest the Speer 9mm L. 124 grain Gold Dot Hollow Point round. It has been tested by a number of very good law enforcment agencies and they are being issued for duty weapons in a number of LE agencies. I carry the Gold Dot Hollow Point Round in my handguns in .38 Special, 9mm L., 40 S & W caliber, 44 Special and .45 ACP. They work very well and I think you would be happy with it. I have 3 S & W Model 39-2 pistols and all shoot them without a problem. I agree with the comments on practicing a great deal with your handgun as shot placement is very important but I still think the Gold Dot is an excellent round to use.
