After taking the advice of some forum members and a couple hours work here is what my new 686 looks like. I used Mothers Hub and Billett polish. Thanks!

Next up is the wood combat grips. The S&W website has just one (I believe they are Cocobolo, I'm sure its spelled wrong) so I may look at Hogue. I would like the S&W medallians as well but didn't see an option for that.

Another forum member just let me know about Altamont grips. They were grips S&W used to use out of the factory. They offer the S&W medalion for only an additional 10 dollars. They have a variety of woods and styles you can choose from and they are very nicely priced compared to others. You should check them out.

That look a lot better then the factory finish on the new ones.I know i am going to do mine now.

SWEET! I just got one, too. Shot it for the first time today and loved it. It was interesting shooting it side by side with my Model 19 6". Both are great guns, just different.

Congratulations!

Excuse my ignorance, I am a new 686-6, 6" barrel owner. By reading this thread I am assuming that you polished this yourself? Is it hard to do? And finally is their a thread or video that explains the process? Any advise/help would be appreciated.

I don't see any listing for L-frames on the Altamont page, do they take the same grips as another frame size?

Yes, Its easy to do. You can use a number of different polishes but I took some advice I got on this forum and purchased Mothers Mag Polish and also Mothers Billet Polish. Just do the hub polish first using a clean rag and use some elbow grease. When you are happy with it use the billet polish to finish it off. I put about 2 hours into it and I'm happy with the way it turned out. Good luck! My 686+ looks so much nicer to me now.

I noticed the same. I don't know. Hopefully someone here can answer that. I really like the Hogue with the finger grooves and stripe on the bottom cap. They go for over $100!

When I was searching for new grips I noticed alot of sites that list them as K/L grips. I'm assuming they are the same size for both frames.

Yes you are right k and L frame grips are the same size and are inerchangeable.

The only difference is square butt and round butt.
