Hi guys. Its been awhile since I was on, but the events of week ago Saturday night have brought me back online.
Ill tell what happened, then what I learned, feel free to scroll to the bottom.
Last Saturday night I received a call from a female friend who was at a party. She had been drinking, but had a designated driver with her. She was outside and just trying to sober up. Asked her if she needed anything, and she said something to drink. (Water). So I drove the 20 minutes up the road to take her a couple of bottles of water. The house she was at was in the country on a dead end road. I pulled onto the street and she was waiting in the middle of the road. I stopped in the middle rolled down the window and past her the water. Made sure she had a ride, and was okay. She said she was, and walked around the front of the car and back to the house.
I started a 3 point turn, turning left to the edge of the road, and preparing to back up. This is when I notice that her ex husband is walking up to the car. He reaches back to throw a bunch through the open window, and lean towards the middle of the car, and take the hit on my shoulder. Unfortunatly this is where I find out he has a knife in his hand and get stabbed in the shoulder.
He backed away, then approached again. My car is a 87 bmw soft top convertible. I didnt feel I could get the window up or back up in time to avoid a second attack so I threw the door open causing him to back up.
I exited the car, feeling it was safer at the time. (lots of mistakes made). pulling my jacket off i wrapped it around my left arm, hoping to use it as a shield. He came at me again, I tried to block but only managed to get my left hand cut and stabbed in the belly under the belly button. This backed me back against the open car door. I looked in the car for something to use, but the only thing I had was my cell phone and my 7-11 double gulp of MT Dew. 64 oz of ice and soda, I grabbed it and as he came forward threw it open end first into his face. This caused him to back up, and he tripped and fall over onto his back. Others hearing him fall, came out and restrained him. I got back in my car, called 911 and drove to the nearest major intersection to wait for sheriff and paramedics. No one at the house, accept for the attacker even realized I had been stabbed till after I left.
The attack probably lasted 1 minute or two start to finish.
I was surprised at how unprepared I was to deal with this situation. Im 6'5" 320 my attacker 6'2" 200. I usually leave the house with my leatherman on my belt, but that night I was in just sweats, tennis shoes. I failed to see the threat till it was too late.
I have 4 staples in my shoulder and 9 in my belly. The belly wound was deep and all the way up to the layer that protects your organs. The CT Scan done in the trama ER veriied it was mm away from damage.
(Side note, it also showed lesions on my kidney and my liver. The kidney is cancer but early enough they can save my kidney, silver lining I suppose)
I have read here before of people saying how fast a person with a knife can close distance. I really didnt believe that before last Saturday night, now I am a believer.
I second guess my decision to leave the car. I didn't believe I could get the window closed to prevent a second attack, or move the car as I was in the middle of the 3 point turn.
An hour after that attack I was in the trama ER and he was in Jail.
I feel my first failure was being in a unfamiliar area, at night and not being aware of my surroundings. Then once I was in trouble, having an exit strategy that got me out wasn't clear.
Appreciate any thoughts you all have.
