You are right about the Hogue grips.I'm a fan of factory checkered target stocks, as my S&W revolvers are all older versions that came with them and I like keeping my guns all-original in appearance. But the most comfortable (for me) wood stocks are these S&W accessory stocks.

I think they are either made by Gun Grip Supply as they sell ones exactly like those or are sold to S&W and GGS by the manufacturer.
Overall, I think it's hard to beat the rubber Hogue MonoGrip for comfort and a good hold on the gun.
