To Re-Load or Not???

Bill, I should get my load books tomorrow according to UPS. I will PM you and grover with bullet info.I will send grover an email with files, so he can scan and have a hard copy to keep. I will send you a copy if you want.

I have 1000 of them myself.....and no time to load. That's ok the extra cash landed me a S&W 22A and a Keltec PF9. :)

I have a 22A. It shoots really well! I bought it from Cabela's Gun Room for $206. My son spotted it and pointed it out to me. He stood in front of it and would not move until I came back with the clerk! That is how I knew he liked it. It was slightly used but looked new. It was also about $60 cheaper than the new one out under the glass. We sighted it on last week finally. It is dead on at 30 yards with open sights. My son really likes shooting it. I told him that it would be his to carry when we are up at our farm.:D You will like it!

Mine was like 100 more but under the circumstances. Lol which model is it? Mine is the camo 5.5" barrel. Wasn't keen on the real tree but after I ordered checkered Altamont oak grips it will look awesome. Like most Smith pistols I HATED the camo stock grips. Very boxy and cheap feeling.

Unbelievably, I placed an order to bullets at Natchez on the 27th and it shipped on the 28th. I should have my 40 grainers in hand next Thursday.

There's a little bit of concern with the 40 gn Sierra Varminter HPs I ordered. When I told Grover what I had ordered he sent me a link to page that listed the RPM limits for various varmint-type bullets. The listed max for the Sierra was 216,000 RPM. Out of my MVPs 24" 1:9 barrel that equates to a max velocity of 2700 fps. None of the reload data I have for a 40 gn bullet starts below 3200 fps, but the test barrels they're being shot out of have a 1:14 twist.

But I called Sierra yesterday and the tech I spoke with assured me that the bullets I ordered have no speed limitations on them, and that I can shoot them like I own them...even out of 1:9 twist barrel.

So now my plans are to make up test loads ranging from ~2500 fps (I'm having to extrapolate back for the sub-3200 fps loads) up to 3700 fps. I'm basing my charge weights on H335 data, which hasn't been tracking well against my WC844 powder. But the H335 data has proven to be safe, pressure wise, so I'll just have to chrono the loads to see what velocities I get. And more importantly, see at what velocity these bullets disintegrate out of the muzzle.

It is the standard 22A that has the gray finish with black grips. Yours should look really nice!:) Hey Zip I am going to send you a PM.:)

Got it and responded! Thanks!! Yours have the 4" or 5.5" barrel??

This it????

I WANTED the 7" barrel version. The store owner just laughed.

This is what I got...

With this grip on the way.... (Top right side)

Backordered 3 to 6 weeks. Ugh!!!

Yep that is it! We got it with the 5.5 barrel. It shoots nice! Even with Iron sights! We have it sighted in at 30 yards dead on. My son is going to try it during squirrel season next fall. He can't wait! I am done with my project. The crease in the pages caused some difficulty but I am sending you email. Let me know what you think.

Zip- I really like those grips! They are nice. Hmmmm. I will show them to my son and see what he thinks. He will probably say "ahhh dad, I really like those". I know what that will mean!:D Birthday gift in a couple of months!

It will shoot SO MUCH better with the altamonts! Not to mention look better. When I bought my 649 the smith grips were horrible! I hated the way it shot. I ponied up for some hardwood checkered hogues and I was popping 6" groups at 50 yards. Grips are as important to a pistol as optics to a rifle. ;)

Nice pistol! Now check your email!:D

Strange, I read this post a lot and it has become one of my favorite. Today I flipped to the last page and saw that awesome .357 and found myself checking if I was in the correct forum. Nice to see some classic tool pictures in this forum.

My hat is surely off to you if you are getting 6" groups at 50yds with that beautiful gun. And it does give me something to strive for with my Pre-27 and its 6" barrel. :D

Returning for a moment to the thread.....my LnL press arrived so I am running out of excuses not to start reloading!

Sorry for the diversion. I do try and stay on topic but since we were talking grips..... It just came out!

My shooting isn't always that good but when we range qualified at 50 yards all were within a group smaller than a paper plate with 2 outliers I think. I'm not a ragged hole guy. Don't shoot much from the bench. Almost always standing or kneeling. My goal is always to put as many shots into a "paper plate" as possible. I figure if I HAD TO that's critical area of the chest. I'm sure there are MANY MANY shooters out there who could put me to shame but for a self taught shooter since a kid with a BB gun I do pretty well for myself. It always came to me very naturally. Right now I want to focus on more combat style point shooting techniques. Anyone check out the DVD the NRA sent members? It's excellent!

Did you ever see that guy repetitively hitting a cowbell at 80 yards with a Glock 19?? That's freaking amazing shooting right there!! It's on YouTube.

.....sorry guys......back to reloading!!

I found a new (to me) vendor that had some of Alliant's new Power Pro 1200-R powder so I ordered a keg and cancelled my order for the multiple 1# cans Alliant powder from Grafs.

Having just one additional powder to experiment with should make my range time less chaotic. :)

And I took my son to the indoor pistol range this morning and did well enough to keep him impressed with his dad behind a pistol. :D

I made myself an aperture out of a clip-on bicycle rear view mirror (sans mirror of course :D ). It made all the difference in being able to keep both sights and the target in focus at 20 yards.

And my home-made brass catcher did it's job when my AMT Hardballer or Sig 229 decided to eject cases out to the right rather than straight up and behind. :)

Well, apparently there are still places that ship reloading components quickly. My bullet order from Natchez shipped the next day. And my order from Midsouth shipped in two days.

Graf's is quoting up to a six week delay to ship hazmat orders. That gives the consumer a lot of time to shop around.

Anyone know what that noise is? Bill?........ Hint: Lyman 1200, walnut media and about 50 or so .308 brass!

Press is set up and I'm working through all the various adjustments and stuff. Was thankful I didn't have any case lube because it would force me to go over and over things again. But then I found my RCBS lube kit was in a UPS box that I hadn't opened. Could be a late night with my new toys.

Bill, I do believe that I would like to take the drive up your way to fire my first rounds from my setup. At least I can have a witness so Grover will believe me. :D

That's great news, Scott. Now lose some ZZZZs from your last post so my browser can fit the thread window! hahaha

I was planning on making my next trip up to Chabot on Friday morning (a lot less crowded Fri and Mon), but if you can't make it on a weekday I can do an early weekend day. :)
