wanting to buy a 22 rifle, what would be a good purchase without braking the bank?

If you're so inclined do a search on this forum. The subject has come up a number of times.

I have two Marlin 60s, one that's about 10 years old and one about 40 years old. I've been very happy with both, and both are very accurate. I did have some problems with my older one jamming, but a full tear-down fixed it and it has been very reliable since.

I haven't priced one lately, but the last time I looked new ones were running about $200. I see used ones often enough for around $100. The older ones have 18 round magazines, while the newer ones only hold 14 rounds. The newer ones hold the bolt open on the last round, while the older ones don't do that.

I have a variety of Marlins and they are all respectable, semi and bolt. I have a new S&W M&P 15-22 that I really enjoy. Last winter I bought an old Remington pump that feeds anything and it was about $150. There are many brands out there that are reliable and fun to shoot. Keep watching this thread and you will get some more ideas.

I have a Savage Model 64. I think I gave around $129-ish?
Not high end, not even all that pretty.
But, with a $40 Bushnell on it, it's a tack driver, and pretty much digests any ammo I've put in it.
Many bothersome and destructive critters have fallen to it.

Breaking the bank isn't always a bad idea. A really good 22 is the only 22 you will need. And they will last long as gun ownership will. Quality AR platform 22's, and bolt guns, and maybe a few semi-autos will be worth owning! I probably won't bother with the AR platform (I do have an adapter set-up), but have 5 real good and 6 or 7 good 22's. What is surprising is how good so-so in the 1950's is! For Christmas in the early 50's; mom bought dad a Mossburg semi auto with scope new for like 12 or 15 dollars. He has all kinds of big dollar 22's, but that is still his go to gun for critter control and plinking. The Weatherby/Anshutz of few years ago could be had in the $400+ range, and are unbelievably good shooting. I've had a 10/22 for over 40 years without a hiccup and my best friend just bought a take-down model for a truck gun and it seems to be right in there. The point is to buy quality/proven designs not the latest, cheapest junk, and it will be the last 22 you will need (until you kids want to start shooting).

the marlin 795 is a nice semi auto. it's the same action as the 60 with a detachable 10 rd mag. it comes in blue or stainless and my blued model is a real tack driver. don't know what they're selling for now but they are reasonably priced. you can go to rimfirecentral.com and they have sections for all the major brands. lee

Something like a Henry lever action is also an option. Not too expensive, takes pretty much any kind of 22 ammunition, and enjoyable to shoot.

I can't think of any 22's I don't like. Find one in the price range you want to spend and get it.

I like the 10/22 but I've owned Marlin, Remington, Squires-Bingham, Sears, and probably some others I don't remember now. They all worked just fine.

Look on the used rack. I've always had good results there. If it looks like it's been taken care of on the outside, it probably has been on the inside.

I'm thinking I might look for a Henry myself.

I've had a 10 22 for many years and recently bought my kid an SR22. The Ruger platform can't be beat! Good luck.

A vintage (pre re-bounding hammer) Marlin 39A is a FINE rifle! It will shoot Shorts, Longs & Long Rifles without any adjustments. Very accurate and a high quality gun. Breaks in half for easy cleaning & transport. Just a classic rifle - and the choice of Annie Oakly!

If you want a Target Quality - Sporting rifle, there is NOTHING BETTER than the CZ 453 American Bolt Action with the Single Set Trigger. The most accurate rifle I have personally fired (1 hole 1/4" groups @ 100 ft.) and infinitely adjustable trigger. You will NOT find a better rifle on the market even for double it's price!

The Ruger 10/22 which is an extremely popular rifle is inexpensive and good as a plinker, but simply not in the same class as the two above, IMHO. It has a poor trigger and is only fairly accurate - but it is cheap.

I love 22s and like Alot of other people here i tip my hat to ruger. Some of the best 22s on the market

Go buy a Mossberg bolt action with detachable magazine. My personal favorite is a 43MB military trainer. 200$ will get a fine Mossberg that is more accurate than the shooter. 1938 to 1957 are good years.

I just found my neighbor a 10/22 at WM for 229 + tax. That was the cheapest I have seen in a long time. He really likes it. You can do a lot of accs. for it as you get more cash.

You don't say what type you want, but if your looking for a bolt action ,
Give a look at a CZ.
They are very good. I am going to get one as soon as I find one with a nice enough stock-Got to have pretty wood!

Two come to mind, Ruger 10/22 for fun and Savage bolt action for accuracy. Both are inexpensive guns.

Why is 22lr ammo so hard to find? Because there are so many great 22's out there! I have a m&p 15-22 and love it. I have a lot of friends who have the 10/22 and love them! You really can't go wrong with either.
My advice? Buy a different caliber so I can find ammo again! .223 is only .003 larger!
