22 rifle

Why is 22lr ammo so hard to find? Because there are so many great 22's out there! I have a m&p 15-22 and love it. I have a lot of friends who have the 10/22 and love them! You really can't go wrong with either.
My advice? Buy a different caliber so I can find ammo again! .223 is only .003 larger!

Johnny, I think you are mistaken about the relationship of .223 Remington to .22 LR.
I am hoping the .22 rimfires will be plentiful again in the future as it still is the cheapest thing you can shoot that has powder.

I think you missed the fact that he was kidding. :D

I have a marlin 60 that I haven't shot for years because it always starts jamming the second tube full and has to be cleaned.

What are you going to use it for mainly, that will decide what to buy.

Myself I live in Ohio but have land in wv and travel there about every month and a half. I have an Alice pack that I keep some camp cooking gear and such so I bought a henry ar7 and just leave it in my pack all the time. This way I don't even think about taking my 22 as I always take the alicepack so the 22 is always there. Sure its not going to last through millions of rounds or win any competitions but it works for me if I decide to plink or shoot a groundhog while on the farm or if I don't use it then it just stays in the pack.

I take a group of teens shooting and have a small collection of .22's.
They like the tactical sytle .22's, for non paper target shooting, then the semi auto handguns., then revolver 22...so on, bolt action last.

We have different targets set up, many online stores have some really neat (non paper) targets they put on sale every so often.
Many to choose from these days...even ones that "go bang" when hit.

Ive been seeing some "a few" 10-22s in stock local, lasting about two to three days at most but at least staying on the wall for a few days.

Recommending a .22 rifle is like saying "What car should I buy?" There are hundreds and hundreds of choices from new to used to classic.

If you are looking for a classic bolt look for a Remington 541S on the used market. It may break the bank but will be worth it.

A Winchester 61 pump or 1890 pump will also break the bank but will be worth it.

A Reminton 513T military trainer will not break the bank and will shoot fantastic.

A Mossberg M44US military trainer will not break the bank and will also shoot well.

A Winchester 52 Sporter will break the bank but will be all the gun you will ever need in your lifetime unless you need a Springfield Armory Model 1922 training rifle.

I guess you can tell I like old stuff.

You can Never have too many .22s.

I have been shooting .22's for 52 years. I have ~ 70 rifles now. Thus "guy22". I have shot competion small bore matches, and belonged to my High School, and College teams.

Your question seems to depend on price. No mention of type of shooting, or type of Action wanted.(Pump, Lever, Bolt, Semi-Auto).
So I am assuming plinking/target. I know todays market is crazy, and I see some stupid prices out there.

That said for general plinking/new gun go for the Marlin 60.
Probably the most bang for the buck out there. There have been over 6 million of them made for a reason!

For a little more money go with a Ruger 10/22. The new Ruger BX25 mags have been a game changer to me. The only thing I never liked about the 10/22 was the 10 round mag. The after market ones always gave some problems. The new BX25 is great, and long needed IMHO.

I have found over the years that some of the best used .22's, were Remingtons made in the 1950's & 60's. Called the old "bee hives" because of the bolt shape. Models 510, 511, 512, and 513. I have a model 513T that is right there with my Whinchester 52. I have bought 10-11-12's for less than $100.00. All will shoot short, long, and Long Rifle.

All that said I would pay a little more and get a 10/22 with some BX25 Mags. You can always sell/trade for somthing else, and not lose a lot of money.

Good luck buying .22lr ammo right now. You can find anything you want on Gunbroker at 3 to 4 times last years price. In LGS not so much.
