Brian Williams Just Insulted the USMC!

Been out of uniform for an awful long time. I did
notice, though, that by the time all of us recruits got out
of Boot Camp, that our training had overcome any differences
we may have brought with us. I could have served with
any Marine then, and I'd bet with any Marine now.
As far as any talking head's remarks, they can go and
pound sand.

For crying out loud, if you complain to NBC or to your local affliate, spell right. One officer above spelled "mercenary" wrong in his post. I hope that error wasn't in his complaint.

relax, mercenary was an after thought on this post, I always use MS word and yes I spell check!

listening to or watching the "news" programs is comparable to believing political promises of truth and justice for all....

I'm watchng the NBC...

That was your first mistake!

Don't watch the liberal media. Their numbers are imploding and if they continue to do so, eventually they will either go out of business or the shareholders will demand changes necessary to end this joke called the media.

Thanks

My best friend from high school served in the Marines some 45 years ago. Unfortunately we have not stayed in touch with each other.

Thanks to you all. You know what you did and what Brian Williams thinks about Marines is not important.

I don't like Brian Williams and never watch him. Matter of fact I don't watch NBC at all. If I feel the need to watch national news I watch Scott Pelley on CBS. I would probably feel better if I didn't watch any news at all. My Mother always said that no news was good news and I think she was right.

Like mentioned above I watch a lot of westerns, as they tend to fit me better than most of the **** on television.

I will have to reserve comment or judgement on what he allegedly said. How many actually saw the news report or are you just jumping on the bandwagon? I would have to see a re broadcast of the News. Mr Williams may not be your cup of tea but he certainly is not stupid nor unpatriotic to our armed forces.

I just watched Rock Center with the interview with Mrs Jobs and immigration and about a young undocumented young man who wanted to be a Marine. He went through school and some training but could not become a Marine as he had no SS number.

Nothing at all derogatory or disparaging about the Marines or Latinos was said, Mr Williams actually said he knew several Marines.

Hope this is all spelled correctly.

If they were inferring that someone enlisted and went through some basic training of ANY branch of the service without a SSN I think they are lying. Unless things have changed US citizenship has never been a prerequisite to serve in the US military.

Exactly...military service is about the only thing an undocumented illegal alien can do legally. While there are restrictions as to what career fields are offered to those who are in the US illegally, as well as not being able to have a security clearance any higher then confidential, which in effect bars an illegal from many training opportunities, illegals can and do join the military every day. Those without SS#'s get them issued upon acceptance into the armed forces, and in almost every case, this is and has been, for eons, the path to citizenship for many who come to the US without proper documentation.

P.S. I might add that the Marine Corps probably takes in more undocumented men and women then all the other branches. From a cultural perspective, Hispanics, for example, view the USMC as the toughest of the services, hence they find that most appealing when it comes to "bragging rights."

Come to think of it, I think I'd be insulted if I was Latino and he was inferring that our lot was not worthy of higher aspirations. But that might not register with Marines, many of whom seem to think that there is no higher calling. ;)

For ANY armed service member, there is no higher calling, nor a more prestigious career. To write the government a blank check for up to and including your own life, is something that the so-called 1%'ers don't do much of. It is selfless and honorable, which is more than I can say of the fat-cats on Wall Street. Though, I do believe if we are to grant a particular route to citizenship for illegal aliens, then military service should be a part of that requirement. Not for the reason HE stated, but what better way to show that you want to become a contributing member of our society, than to be willing to lay down your life to protect it?

Thank you to current and former Marines, Airmen, Soldiers, Seamen, and Coasties.

This is just not true. I've never seen any illegal immigrants in the U.S. armed forces. I HAVE seen LEGAL immigrants who were not citizens, however.

"Non-citizens are eligible to enlist in the military but can not be commissioned. A non-citizen that is eligible to join the military must meet certain requirements: (1) Have an Alien Registration Receipt Card (stamped I-94 or I-551 Green card/INS Form 1-551), (2) Have a bona fide residence established, and (3) Have established a record of the U.S. as their home. Some non-citizens from countries with a reputation of hostility towards the U.S. may also require a waiver. The federal government cannot petition on behalf of an illegal immigrant so that they can obtain legal status and be able to enlist in the military. In order for an immigrant to join the United States military, they must first go through the immigration process of the USCIS (previously known as the INS) and then and then begin the enlisting process. Another requirement is that the Green Card and/or visa if the immigrant desiring to join the military must be valid for the entire period of their enlistment."

If not mistaken, entry to any of the U.S. armed forces, is not dependent on citizenship. In fact, it's a path to citizenship. I believe you have to have a "green card". If you have a "green card", you can legally get a SSN. Service gets you to the "front of the line".

When I served in the Navy in the late 60's-early 70's, I knew several Filipinos who were serving, and they weren't U.S. citizens. A lot of them made up the rating of Steward, officers' servants. That was one of the few ratings for which they were qualified.

However, I worked with one Filipino who had a degree in accounting from a Filipino college, but couldn't enter as a Seaman recruit. After getting in, he managed to cross over to Seaman, from Stewardsman, and eventually was promoted to Disbursing Clerk 3c. Shortly after he got out, he was granted U.S. citizenship. I know this is only anecdotal, but I'm sure there are others out there.
