Ammo nightmares

Man 3 times today I have been notified by Midwayusa, that they had stock in and because I was online I immediately went to purchase and no matter how fast I entered the order, it was too late. I am getting mad as the devil about this. It is frustrating. I need 9mm defense ammo and have plenty of target range rounds. But I have every self defense round with 5 stars or 4 and especially my favorite Hornady Critical Defense on the list to be notified. I called my LGS and checked with them and they 2 or 3 self defense brands and were wanting $30 for a $19.00 box of ammo. They had critical defense and zombie which are anywhere from 3-5 bucks cheaper and the only difference is the tip. No difference, still $30 bucks. BS!!

Right now, if you want to play, you've got to pay. The only other option is to quit shooting entirely. Some gun stores claim to have had to pay retail or higher just to have ammo to sell and keep the doors open. Then they have to make money too.

Michaeld: You say you have target range rounds. Do you mean full metal jacket, or 'ball' ammo? If you do, please note that armies using 9mm weapons use only FMJ ammo. And, with all the 9mm ammunition used in the worlds' submachine guns and military handguns over the past century, more people have been killed and wounded with FMJ 9mm than all the 9mm 'defense rounds' combined.

I shoot .38Spl almost exclusively. If all I can obtain is target wadcutter ammo, I'll be OK. The gun will be loaded.

I agree, though, that the ammo situation is difficult.

Alot of people are having the same problem with Midway. At least four times in the last two weeks I have gotten a notice that ammo was in stock and within seconds I had logged on to find it gone. I have been buying from Midway for the last eight years with no problem until now.These are not regular times I understand but something just doesn't seem right.

Just to toss this out there, I think its likely that the systems at midway aren't exactly set up with this kind of situation in mind. You're better off checking their site on a regular basis than waiting for that email alert.

I know that larger companies can take up to a day to get their email blasts all distributed. (I have 5 email addresses on my comcast account and when I get their spam it can take a day or two for it to hit all of my email accounts).

Personally when I think of it I just peruse by the various ammo sites I buy from and see what's up. There is also slickguns.com which has helped me snap up some easy ammo from time to time.

I guess I just lucked out, but last week I got the email notification, ordered
by 7:30, and at 8:30 I got another email that they were packing my 5 boxes. Maybe the timing was right.

FYI, most gun shops are purchasing their ammunition from distributors, which are charging more. So, if you see higher prices for ammo in a gun shop it's probably because they had to pay more to get it. If you aren't willing to pay more for it, that's your choice and I suspect you really don't need it.

As for email notifications, try emailing yourself sometime and see how much delay can be involved. It's not instantaneous. In fact I've seen emails take as long as 15 minutes to get from being sent to being received. In the case of something that is really in demand, like primers, just a 5 minute delay can mean the difference between in stock and sold out. It's why I've given up on purchasing primers on the net and instead buy locally, even when they are 50 bucks per thousand.

I had a customer the other day that told me, he had picked up 3 boxes of 9mm ammo at Walmart. Then he said, "and I don't even own a 9mm."

I thought what the heck ?? Yo-Yo's buying stuff they don't even need.
People that normally buy a box or two of ammo every couple years are buying cases & cases of ammo.

People paying two, three, four times the normal going rate for a box of ammo.. ???

Hot dawg, nailed one this morning

Ha hahhh, I got one this morning, got a box of 50, .223s for $24.50 through Midway. I tried 2 times on these yesterday, 3rd time is a charm. And yeah I need target rounds and critical defense rounds because it is what I would prefer to carry on the 9mm. I want to go to the range but will go through the box of 50 I have in no time so will need some wad cutters to replace those. But got an order through this morning!

Ammo seems to be the new gold rush here in Dallas, TX! Every time I check the shelves they're nearly empty, just a few 12 & 20 gauge boxes. The range sells the for almost double and yeah people that don't have guns buy the ammo to make a few bucks from their friends with guns :/

You can breathe easy for awhile. Their whole site is down now. I will practice with reloads until the panic ends. I know where my PD ammo hits and am familiar with the recoil.

If I have to defend myself more than 40 or 50 times between now and then I intend to resupply myself off the bodies of my attackers, because that will mean we are in a full-blown SHTF situation.

Remember you are responsible for every round you fire, including the ones that hit an innocent bystander that have gone through someone. Use the FMJ for target practice and wait for the Hollowpoints.

The reason FMJ ball ammunition is required in war is for humane reasons and that expanding bullets as described in the Hague Conference of 1899 (and as early as St. Petersburg of 1868) were prohibited in War. Ball ammunition tends to wound rather than maim or even kill. It was accepted by armies of the world who knew that a wounded soldier put out of action and requiring treatment reduced battle effectiveness more than killing one outright. In a self defense situation where rules don't apply, using an expanding bullet is generally accepted as being the most immediately effective in stopping the attacker. Of course the best ammunition to use when the time comes is the one that you have.

I choose to use hollow points, defense ammo in my carry.
for the same reason law enforcement does. FMJ will go right through a threat and you are responsible for what it hits next. only makes good sense. i use wacutters at the range, just picked up 50 for $18, and 25 Zombie Hornady rounds for $22. take a chill pill brother. we live in a state of supply and demand. i enjoy my range time. and as far as how many times will i have to defend myself. it only takes once and i won't miss, shoot small, miss small, do it wisely and hope i don't have to, but if i do, i am doing it right.

If that's all you got or can afford use it. My opinion is fmj is better than nothing. And let me tell ya I've been a street medic for over twenty years and just about every DRT I've seen has been toasted with cheap fmj ammo.

I have the same problem with MidwayUSA. I click on the link the second it appears and "sorry sold out". I wonder if your location makes a difference......Midway being in the mid-west and me on the East coast.....mid-west folks must get the e-mail sooner. By the time it gets to me all the ammo is gone. Just guessing. And my local Walmarts haven't gotten any ammo in over a month (ever since the new gun laws) makes me wonder. This sucks!
