Palmetto bugs

We had these roaches in Virginia and we called them cockroaches when we first saw them and our realtor laughed and said, "No, they're just wood roaches."

When she was moving away from her house which was next door to the one she sold us, we were having drinks on the porch when one scuttled past her. She pulled her legs up onto the chair and screeched, "Yikes! A cockroach! I hate those things!"

Well, this is how we managed them: We cut down the trees that were too close to the house, removed the shrubs and vegetation from the foundation and put down a 3-foot perimeter of decorative rocks, and sprayed and applied Bayer 3-in-1 around the house perimeter and under it too.

Here in southern Texas we have the huge tree roaches. Get this, a few weeks ago I opened my med cab in the middle of the night and there was a giant one on...my toothbrush!!! I hate them. And they are not just pests, they carry diseases..many of them.

How would you explain Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine?

If those states are explainable, I have nothing better to offer than the usual rather facile explanation of allowing immigration from NY, MA, & CT. Doubtless this accounts for part of the blueness there. I would suspect that "reasonable restrictions" on handguns are not far away, especially in VT.

Further South "reasonable restrictions" are really likely to be just that; reasonable. I will not be able to fire my 105mm except during daylight hours.

I had one of these monsters stoll across my office floor this morning. OMG I nearly fainted. I am in central Va.

I lived in the southern piedmont area of N.C. near Charlotte for many years and we became very familiar with these critters. Occasionally, I would encounter one that invaded my home. I soon learned that these things have no fear of man and will come right at you. The neighbors and I could never figure out where they came from until one day the exterminator discovered their lair. He inserted a gas nozzle into one of the holes in a manhole cover located in the street in front of my home. When he shot gas into the opening, there must have been several hundred bugs that charged out of the holes and into the street. One neighbor who happened to be the city fire chief, photographed the scene which he sent to the city manager. This resulted in the city treating the system with a good dose of some sort of gas which proved deadly to the bugs. I moved shortly there after so I don't know if the bugs returned or not. You can rest assured that there are plenty of the nasty devils in North Carolina.

These have their own swimming hole.
I sent a copy to the manager of the place so he could show his exterminator. It was in the ladies bathroom, you can imagine how that would have gone over.

Some big roaches make their way inside from under the back door and through the garage. From one end of the house they always try to eat the cat's food and are quickly dispatched. On the other end they'd get into the one brand of crackers and taco shells (specifically) which have all been tossed. Usually the cat plays with them until someone comes around. They can sometimes be found dead in random places. The wife gets a little excited when she sees one. Usually when it rains heavily we'll get one or two in the house.

We rent the house and the owners have refused to do anything about the entry ways...or any repairs for that matter...

Killed one about 5 minutes ago. We live in a log cabin so they are frequent visitors no matter what we do, they keep coming back.
