I have a FS9 and a 40C, and because of living in the Peoples Republic of CA, I only have 10 round mags. However I have never been able to fit 10 rounds into any of them. 9 is the max. Is that the way it is supposed to be? Is my only way to have 10 rounds actually 9 in the mag and 1 in the chamber? Has anyone tried cutting off a coil or two to get 10 into their mag? My range mags have several thousand through them and I always kept thinking that they would break in and loosen up a bit, but 9 is still all I can fit.

I actually use the Uplula Loader (from day 1). Still cannot get the 10th one in more than half way.

Thanks. I was wondering if cutting the spring was the thing, but the follower sounds good. I'll probably give that a try.

I can't load the last round in my 12 rounders (9c) with my Uplula, I do the first 11 and then have to load the 12th by hand. I think the thickness of the loading beak on the Uplula is too thick to allow the last round and the beak under the lips of the mag at the same time.

Now that is something that I hadn't thought of. I'll try #10 without the loader.

I've never had an issue loading any of my .40c mags by hand. I see similar threads come up on the Glock forums on guns like the G30, but I've never had an issue. Not to sound like a d-bag, but maybe try a little harder?

Without using the loader I was able to get 10 into 2 of my mags but the other 4 still will not go past 9 (I need about another 1/8th of an inch). And for DocSunShine - I think I was trying pretty hard. Going to try akgsimon's ideas of modifying the follower I think.

The 10 round mag I have is completely opposite. I can fit 10 rounds into the magazine but I can't get the magazine into the gun! For some reason it doesn't seat all the way. Is anyone having that problem?

I had the same problem.
I filed the followers down and it fixed it.

Mine 9c is that same with the 12 rounders, you either have to load it in with the slide open, or give it a stronger 'smack' to get it loaded with the slide closed.

I was having that problem and thought it was normal, then I bought a new magazine (yes, I actually found one) and that one slid in easily with a nice "click" just like an empty mag. I took the follower out of the new one and and old one and compared them. They didn't look anything alike. I called S&W customer service and they said "Yes, the followers have been changed, you can send your magazines back and we'll exchange them, or do you just want me to send you some followers"? I opted for the followers, hopefully they will work the same as my new magazine. As I stated earlier, I can get the 12th round in loading it by hand but apparently there isn't enough "give" in the stack of rounds to easily seat the mag with the slide forward. I'll report back after I get the new followers. I've attached a couple of pictures of the new and old followers that I took and was going to send to S&W but didn't have to.

I would like to remind anyone modifying magazines of the following: (1) Cutting coils off of the recoil spring can and will cause feeding issues, especially with the last or last few rounds, depending on how many coils are cut. It may not show up immediately, but it will over time. (2) If any government LE type gets hold of your modified magazine and through the use of ape-like force gets 11 into your magazine you are suddenly guilty of a felony. This is, in part, why the tolerances on the 10th round are so close. It is intolerable for sure, but better to load "one round down" than to commit a felony by modifying "just a little too much."

One other problem when the tolerances are so close. Be sure to test the ability to lock the magazine in place without slamming it home with the slide CLOSED. If you cannot do this, then you need one round down anyway in order to do a "tactical reload."

Excellent points!

If all efforts keep you from loading as indicated by the maker then try talking to maker of magazine, could be a production issue...

I have 7 10rd mags for both my 9FS and 9c in MA. I have a Glock loader that I use on the Mags. The last round is tough on all the mags but I'm able to get it in.
