Netroots Nation features a call to action on gun control - San Jose Mercury News

"National teachers union leader Lily Eskelsen Garcia offered a prediction Friday about gun lobbyists and politicians who are indifferent to the carnage of gun violence.

"I'm not an ordained minister, I'm not a theologian, but these guys are going to hell," the National Education Association's vice president said during a panel discussion at the Netroots Nation convention of liberal online activists."

All I have to say to her is, "You first."

With her attitude, and active decision to remain helpless *AND* ignorant... well, I really have to question whether she really is the right person to be put in charge of safeguarding and educating *MY* children.

I don't always agree 100% with the NRA, but by God, if they are so hot to shut the NRA down... well... you can see my tag above. I went from non-member to lifetime member because of all of this stuff. Best money I ever spent.

Heh though I just noticed she seems to believe that taking an active role in your own self defense, and the lawmakers who vote to protect a natural right that is protected by the constitution equates to being "indifferent to the carnage of gun violence."

I don't think any of us are indifferent to it... I'd suggest that we are proactive about it, where she is merely reactionary. I see a threat and take steps to make my loved ones and myself safer, she sees a threat and screams about how someone else should stop all those bad people who want to do bad things.

Foolish.
 
It makes me very disappointed when I read stuff like this about the NEA or other educational organizations. I am a teacher and a lifetime NRA member and certified firearms instructor. Please understand the NEA does NOT represent all educators opinions on this matter.

I don't mean to speak negatively, but I have found in my years of teaching the teachers who have time to become very political and have offices like this are usually not great teachers and / or have been in teaching for so long they have lost touch with the real world. I.e. supervisors who haven't taught in 20 years telling a teacher how to teach kids today.

The world has changed, and unfortunately education in general does not like to change. I am sure we cold debate for days on the issues in education, but common sense doesn't usually prevail. I am still amazed at my county's silence on school safety since recent tragedies.

First off, my hat is off to you. Good educators mean the difference more than ANYONE will ever know in the lives of so many kids. I used to work summer camps where I had a taste of teaching, and its more difficult than most people give credit for.

Secondly, you're a Pro-NRA educator in Maryland? Ouch! How many MD kids have been killed with gun shaped pop-tarts? LOL

My Aunt Teaches Catholic school in Baltimore County and she has some tales about the brilliance of the educators I think we're both talking about. I also have a good friend who's a teacher, who's also the one who introduced me to concealed carry, and taught me to fire my first rifle (I've known him since I was 11 heh, its been a few years). I certainly don't blame teachers in general, but I also remember the political indoctrination that my school tried to force down my throat here too ("Guns are bad, m'kay?") Its a shame that the bad eggs are so good at making themselves so well known and painting the groups they belong to with these kind of things.

Its frightening that some of these people spend so long with our kids each day.

The Short Bus does have enough room for this Lady also

I mentioned this outspoken Union Liberal in my response concerning Mrs. Feinstein, not by name but by shared philosophy. There are more buses available so they can all ride. Seems they were trained by the same instructors. These days Common sense is having a tough time being employed!

Try re-reading the post slowly..........

What I said was the the top of the NEA Union were crooks. I have relatives who are teachers, whom I've discussed this with, it's an informed opinion. What I did not say was all Union members were crooks or that all Unions were bad. Maybe you are unaware there are police unions?

Your attempting to put words in my mouth I didn't say is something I don't like. Can we agree you might have assumed something in your reading of the post that was not intended or would you prefer to bicker over semantics?

Yea, I often aim my breakfast pastry at people in a threatening manner :rolleyes:

It is tough at times, however we also have a guidance counselor who just got to shooting, joined the NRA, and actually has approached me about advising a student 2A group. Of course the administration strongly suggested the group not become a reality. :cool:

I have said this before, I think you would be surprised how many teachers are pro 2A, shoot as a sport, enjoy range time, etc.

I don't understand why education is so over the top with certain topics, it sometimes makes me a bit embarrassed to be a teacher. I always thought we where supposed to guide students , not brainwash them.

I refused to join the Georgia Association of Educators because of their affiliation with NEA. I bet I was one of very few PS Government teachers who had an NRA decal on his whiteboard.;)
 
We can agree that I assumed your comment was directed at union members. I also assumed that you were aware that rank and file members elect their officials. Like all elected officials, you get good and bad.

And I thought Police Officers were members of fraternal organizations, and brotherhoods, not Unions. Am I wrong?

I'd like to know when someone in authority jackhammers this hypocrite for bringing religion into the discussion, when it is well documented how much public education is trying to eradicate any semblance of Christianity.

You are incorrect. Some 'brotherhoods' and 'fraternal organizations' are not unions, but numerically, many if not most are unions whatever they call themselves in the sense that they are collective bargaining units just like teacher's unions.

(The NEA isn't a union, any more than the American Medical Association).

Fair enough, there are police associations like the PBA. Check out the I.U.P.A. It's AFL-CIO. Many are not official unions as defined by Federal Law, but essentially are the same thing, different name.

Union members work for a living, like the rest of us. I have no issue with members. There are certain Unions like the NEA, I think are a negative influence on the US, but there are others that changed it for the better. Sorry we missed each other, my post wasn't the clearest either.

I personally think 75% of the upper echelon of most bureaucracies i.e. Unions, Governments etc are crooks and out for themselves, but hey, I'm a rebel. That bares no reflection on the people that put them there, more the negative evolution of most things man is involved in over a period of time, a great idea is screwed up in the execution.

And thank you. I was unaware that the FOP was a bargaining unit.

I'd like to apoligize, as I'm very defensive about unions. While there were/are crooks involved in Unions, blanket statements are mostly wrong.

In the example of that nimrod with the NEA, I think her association with liberal higher education and the elitist environment it can produce is more of the situation.
 
Thank you for you apology. Do not give it another thought. The internet lends itself to multiple interpretations, unlike us talking over coffee. You defended your principles, I respect that. We're good as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with you on this one too. Really, I don't think its all (even most) teachers, just a loud group of idiots (usually that's what most of these flaps are, a small group of loud idiots making everyone look bad).

I recently inherited the .22 my grandfather took with him on the school bus to participate in his high school's rifle team (He grew up in Baltimore City, shooting his .22 in his basement (they had an unfinished, dirt wall basement).

Its sad how times have changed.
