I had not seen one until I bought one. This is not one of the post 1990 full lug revolvers, but a standard lug -3 from 1970 (sn: K958xxx) with beautiful walnut targets. Just how unusual/rare is a gun of this configuration?

These are nowhere near as common as the 6". The -3 through -5 are most often seen, and I can't recall seeing many 17 to 17-2s with the long barrel.

Just saw a local ad for a 617 with the underlug and an 8 3/8 in bbl. Didn't know they were made either!............Dan

Here's my 17-4 circa 1978.

It's great to see all these nice long tube 17's.

Here is mine sans the rear sight, which is off for maintenance. I'm definitely not a fan of trigger shoes but that's how this one came to me.

I was just looking at this thread of very nice looking long barrel Model 17's and have a question. Some of them have the speed loader cutout and I was wondering if you believe them to be original to the guns?

I have a Model 48 in 8 3/8 and it has the target grips with the speed loader cutout and I don't know if they could be original or not?

Thanks, Brian

Good question! Mine has the magnas seen above that are numbered to the gun. I have since taken them off and put them in the box, replacing them with new targets. The magnas are so small for my hand and that long barrel just wants to droop. That is fixed with the targets.

I was hoping someone would know the answer on the grips? I know with Smith & Wesson you can never say never on some combinations but I can't be the only one wondering about the speed loader cut out on the grips. I agree about the Magna's being small. My hands are not that big but and the target grips feel really nice to me. I don't blame you for removing those and storing them. Beautiful grips on a very fine gun. Brian
