SWS Brass Deflector is now available

Well... surprises do happen!

Went to the range this morning to try the deflectors again, and here are my results. I set both deflectors farther forward than before. This time, I lined up the solid part of each deflector with the opening in the receiver so that none of the slots were in the ejection path.

Do the new deflectors have a different layout than the original? The original has slots all the way to the end and maybe 1/4" of solid material between the last slot and the edge.

Freeway, I really happy to hear you are having better results.

On all 4 of the new designs for the deflector shield, I shrunk the slots and moved them further forward. But they seem to still cause an issue.

I have been working on another redesign on the 25° and 45° deflector shields, and with the revision I will be completely removing the slots the brass deflector. Once the revision is completed and they are made, I will send those out to the testers for further feedback.

Put another 300 rounds down range yesterday. NO bounce backs. Still using the 45 degree with it mounted forward so that only the solid part covers the ejection port. Just in case, here is a picture of what I mean.

My range has some major construction going on this week so I can't shoot. It would be interesting to do that with the 25 and the two 90s and see what happens.

The last time I tried the 25 degree, it worked well. I'm tempted to mount it again and have another go.

It really does seem, at least for ME, that the slots are\were the problem.

I got into this discussion late, I guess. The deflector model I have is one of the early models, I think, and it has never been a problem.

The ammo of choice has always been CCi MiniMags and the ammo, rifle, and deflector have always been problem free. There were other problems w/ other ammo choices but I stopped using the "other ammo choices" before I got the brass deflector.

Occasionally, I will find brass sitting on top of a spent magazine after the bolt locks back. It falls out w/ the magazine change and so is not a problem. I don't do much rapid fire other than the 5 or 6 round bursts but there has been no problem there either.

I'm happy w/ mine and so is the person to my right at the indoor range.

Edit of above info: The rifle has been problem free since an early return to S&W for "current updates" whatever that entailed.

lonejacklarry,

Perhaps your experience helps validate the theory that the ejection patterns are different between rifles. Different types of ammunition may also play a part.

Thanks for the information!

Just wanted to give everyone an update on what's going on with the project.

I have done a redesign on the 25° and 45° deflector shields and I am waiting on the shop to knock out some more prototypes. Once I get them in they will be going out to the testers.

I have removed all of the cutouts and extended the shield down a little bit further to hopefully stop some of the brass that escapes and and bounces around.

Very nice work!! I too am excited to see this revision and look forward to purchasing one from you.

If they're going to be solid, can an option/capability to have them pivot out of the way easily be incorporated?

Maybe a bushing on the far right bolt and a spring loaded detent (or something) on the closer hole?

Looks good. More things to suck money out of my wallet and into my rifle. Yay!

Money well spent in this case. I use the 45 degee proto all the time now, and people to my right think it's the best thing ever invented. :D

Hope to visit the range again soon. Had neck fusion surgery last week and I'm not feeling very well (yet). Going again the first chance I get. Still looking forward to the new design(s)!

Can I get "Gopher Slayer" etched on the side of one of the new plinkin' plates? ;)

...or maybe some lines that look like the slots on the older versions.
