Sheared striker tab SD9VE

They told me another 3+ months for parts.

It's been there since June already.

That's why I'm having my gun shipped back.

There's a sigma striker on ebay.

I'm at Level 1 with S&W customer service for the repair of the striker. I emailed them that I can easily remove the broken striker and send it to them for replacement. They've since emailed me that I'd have to ship the gun and they would provide a prepaid shipping label. However long the repair takes, the SR9 is on duty. I've shipped guns to S&W before and they've always fixed the problem. Funny thing is the Hub in Windsor Locks, CT. where it has to be shipped from is 15 minutes from Smith & Wesson.

Ruger won't sell the striker for the SR series, either. They will sell parts, like springs and cups, but not the whole striker. That makes no sense...if you can take out the striker to replace the springs, cups, or other parts, you should be able to replace the striker, but they said no (I e-mailed them to ask.) Ruger said they replaced strikers on an exchange basis...fine, I can send them one and they send me a replacement, or they can send me one with a credit card deposit, which will either not be charged or credited when I send in my old striker.

That would make more sense...and it would save them money, since shipping would be so much cheaper than sending them the entire gun for them to replace the striker.

Weird, Ruger sent a friend of mine a striker for his SR40 a few years ago. He buggered it up dry-firing without a magazine in place. I can see why S&W wants me to return the gun for striker replacement. They probably won't have it repaired for 3 months due to the lack of parts. It's easier to blame slow service on a backlog of repairs than the unavailability of parts. I snapped a striker in a 9VE "Allied Forces" Sigma 3 or 4 years ago. After it was returned to me I sold it. I'm beginning to feel the same way about my SD9VE.

I have to admit this parts stuff is really starting to chap my @rse.

I've been thinking about getting an M&P and the ONLY reason I would is that the parts for it ARE available online.

I wouldn't even consider buying one if it was in the same boat as the SD.

S&W need to release the parts specifically for this pistol so that curiosity doesn't get someone hurt.

Huh? I don't follow. So, if they don't release the parts, and someone uses a home made one or a modified Glock one and gets hurt or hurts someone else, that is S&W's fault? Just send it off to S&W and carry your spare while you wait.

It's sad, really...and one reason that I'd consider a Glock over a M&P: you can find a very wide array of aftermarket parts anywhere. Why, even our local 7-11 carries Glock accessories! (Kidding.) I do not care for Glocks, mainly because they don't fit my hand nearly as well as does the M&P, but I'm like you...this parts issue is making me consider other options. Virtually every gun show has a Glock armorer, and a couple of my local shops have certified Glock armorers on staff...I think S&W needs to wake up to this.

Of course, it's hard to beat a 1911 if you want aftermarket parts...

The M&P DOES have parts available, thank goodness because I hate the grip on ALL of the Glocks I've handled. They've always felt like I was holding the wrong end of a baseball bat.

The stupidity of the whole thing is WHY S&W is going this extra stupid step on the SD when TONS of parts are available for the M&P.

If SW thinks we are so stupid that we can't change the striker in the SD than I don't want to purchase a firearm from someone who thinks I'm that friggin' stupid.

As a test, I TOLD my lovely wife (who knows jack $hit about pistols but sure as hell can pull the trigger on them!) how to remove and replace the striker on my SD and she did it with flying colors. Love her to death but she's as mechanically inclined as her cat! Met her when I was an EMS helo pilot and she was a Flight Nurse-but that's another story and she wasn't mechanically inclined then either and in fact my fellow pilots warned me about her-HAH!

I can't for the life of me figure out why the hell SW WON'T release parts for the SD but WILL release parts for the M&P.......

I am not mechanically inclined either...and even I can remove the striker on M&Ps, SDs, Ruger SRs, and Glocks. What is even more insane is when they will sell you PARTS of a striker (springs, cups, etc) but won't sell you the entire striker. Do they think you can replace the various parts without taking the striker out of the gun?

It would also save them money...to just mail you a striker rather than pay for shipping the gun to them and pay for shipping the gun back to you. The striker could be mailed for about $2, where the shipping costs of the entire gun are bound to be about $50 (round trip, at their cost.)

I never said anything about it being S&W's fault but it seems that there may some people considering alternatives that may be unsafe. I just think that if the parts were available we would be able to change them out and not have to wait on a backlog. Don't put words in my mouth if you misread something.

I am all for using my warranty and will when it's needed.

Just out of curiosity, did S&W give you a hard time about the warranty? I want to know how it is effected if you remove the striker from the slide. It states in the manual to only field strip the pistol and not go any further than that. If that is the case I am wondering how I should go about returning my pistol for repairs to the galled striker if I am not supposed to even know that it is galled.

Thanks,
Bill

my field stripping may differ in terms than the manuals...

I agree. I clean mine inside and out but how does S&W feel about it? Will it void the warranty? I know that it is a $300 pistol but I would think that the striker should last a lot longer than the 3000 rounds that i have put through it. I still think it would be better and less time consuming to let us buy the parts.

(I am in no way accusing S&W of any wrong doing...)

i wouldnt think s&w would terminate your warrenty over "cleaning" that area of your pistol if you noticed gunk in it and then upon dissassembly found the striker is torn up. i wouldnt say any other reason than this though.

Sure. The only reason I even ask is that it is mentioned several times not to do any more that what is described in the manual. In bold red letters even. Haha.

Thanks,

Bill
