Well after entirely too long, I managed to get out to the range today with a couple friends. I know this isn't reloading specific, but did get a chance to fire off a couple hundred reloads of 200gr SWC's in my S&W 1911, and some home cast 9mm in my S&W 5906, even put a few rounds through my 2206. Tried out a friend's new Kimber Custom II 1911, M&P Shield in 40 (ouch), and dare I say G**** 20 in 10mm.

Even had some spectators. Unfortunately, it might be the last before the weather turns too cold.

Thanks for sharing, I love checking out where other guys (& girls) shoot. Looks like you had a great day out

It was nice to meet with a couple people and have some fun shooting steel. Plus we got to try out each other guns--which is more important than you would think, as there are very few ranges where I live that you can actually rent a firearm. Had been considering the M&P Shield in 9mm for my wife, and after shooting my friend's Shield in 40S&W, have decided against it. She wants a range gun that is comfortable in the hand and has lower recoil, after 1 round of the 40S&W I handed it back. My arthritic wrists did not appreciate the felt recoil. My wife likes my Ruger SP101, as it has small grips and I load light 38 Special for her. Guess she might be getting one for herself, but hopefully with adjustable sights.

A day at the range is a good day. A day at the range with friends makes a good day a Great Day!

As to the targets... plates are good! Shoot 'em down. Stand 'em up. Shoot 'em down again. What's not to like?!!!

Suggest you try a Shield 9mm if you can find one, will have less recoil than the 40, especially if you use a light load (suggest 3.8g HP38 with 124g RN).

I too have thought of getting the wife a Shield 9mm. She uses a Glock now the shield was very uncomfortable in her hands. Her sister has a M&P compact that fits both of them fine, so I'll probably get her that when I can. But we wouldn't know this without sharing other people's handguns at the range. My other sister-in-law has different arthritis than my wife and she found she can't stand the recoil of 9mm or 380, so she works with 22's. Neither of the arthritic ladies can handle a DA revolver, again a day at the range with lots of handguns to try out. Also, some ladies with medium sized hands have a better time with recoil in a double stack magazine, as the backstrap spreads recoil across the palm of the hand. And ladies don't have to load a magazine to full capacity if they don't like the weight, my wife only loads 10 rounds in 15 or 17 round mags. But this way she will carry. Ivan

I am thinking it'll have to be either a single stack semi-auto or revolver for my wife. I had found it odd that she didn't mind some of my 38 Special reloads that approached the +p range in my Ruger SP101, but when she tried my 5906 with mild loads she said it seemed to recoil more. I don't know if it was the slide cycling or not. In handling them both, she said that she liked the SP101 because she could wrap her hand around the grip, with the 5906 she just barely gets her finger tips around the front-strap.

In regards to the Shield, maybe the 9mm would be a lot less than the 40S&W. From just shooting 1 round, my hand/wrist hurt from the recoil of that gun. Even more so than shooting 357 magnum loads out of my SP101. My friend who owns the Shield 40 was even commenting that it was not a "fun gun to shoot" and he wished he'd purchased the 9mm. He was also trying some Buffalo Bore 10mm out of his G*** 20.
