I acquired a 36 square butt not too long ago (thanks for the info already provided) sans grips. I got a set of pachmayr's, but they're huge (certainly bigger than they looked). What's the smallest, lowest profile set available for this gun? Thanks in advance.

The stock Magna (service, walnut) stocks are pretty small. These with a grip adapter are popular for keeping the grip frame small but still being able to control the gun with firing.

I've found it very difficult to find suitable replacement grips for the SB Js. Most makers have used the greater area and shape of the SB to provide a target style grip which is suitable for a Kit Gun but not really for a snub. The Sile grips of the 70s are an example. The SB Pach grips, as you found are clunky and heavy. I tried their Gripper version: same deal.

MurphyDog is correct. The factory Magnas with grip adapter are the way to go.

BOY YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN! I bought my 36 with a set of Herret Shooting Star grips on it. Nice size and shape, give you a real grip on the gun. BUT they look bigger than the gun and are too big for concealed carry.

I got a set of original grips and put them on and they have the opposite problem - too tiny for my hands. I can shoot with them, but I feel like my fingers almost have to wrap around them twice to get a good enough grip.

I'm looking for a cheap t-grip adapter to try out...

You did not specify if your 36 is a 2" or 3" barrel. I put a set of smooth target grips on my 36-1 3" SB that feel and look good. These grips fit the RB or SB J frame. They may look a bit big on a 2".

Almost nobody makes small aftermarket grips for the SB j-frame except Craig Spegel. His grips are kinda spendy and/or have a long lead time. About a year ago I talked Jim Badger into making up these boot grips for me, cut down from his standard 3-finger-size combat grip pattern, but whether or not he'd be interested in making any more I have no idea.

The factory magnas are about as small as it gets. Other than that, what you want is a grip that fills in behind the trigger guard, but does not extend below the frame and that is thin.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and share a little project I'm planning (actually I've already started)...

I mistakenly ordered a set of K frame RB grips off eBay. They are pretty rough and I only paid $12 for them, shipping and all.

I'm going to convert them to J frame grips. They are a little wider when viewed from the side, and about 1/4" longer. I'm going to add a little sliver of wood to the front side (covering up the front strap) and to the bottom. The'll have a bit bigger profile than magnas, but I'll mill the sides down to make them a nice slim/flat package.

Who knows, maybe there will be a demand for them and I'll become a grip maker :)
