So I'm just a little tired and cranky, and had to get this off my chest. I am always seeing people comparing S&W vs Glock and it's usually the G19 vs M&P9 or G26 vs 9c, blah blah blah. So being in the mood I am, I decided to layout the the comparison by manufactures title. Not just arbitrarily in what ever class some one decides to throw a particular firearm in. If the manufacturer calls it a compact its a compact, If they call it a fullsize it's a fullsize. And by all means compare that G19 and M&P9 but don't insist they are in the same class as one is a compact and one is not. So here it is, S&W vs Glock by size per the manufacturers stated size group.

Fullsize: G17/G22- M&P9/40 (FS)
G17: 7.95" long / 5.43" high / 1.18" wide (slide)
M&P9 (FS): 7.63" long / 5.5" high / 1.2" wide

Compact: G19/G23 - M&P9c/40c
G19: 7.28" long / 4.99" high / 1.18" wide (slide)
M&P9c: 6.7" long / 4.3" high / 1.2" wide

Sub-Compact: G26/27 - M&P Shield 9/40
G26: 6.41" long / 4.17" high / 1.18" wide (slide)
M&P Shield 9: 6.1" long / 4.6" high / 1.00" wide

Fullsize: G21- M&P45 (FS)
G21: 8.03" long / 5.47" high / 1.27" wide (slide)
M&P45 (FS): 8.05" long / 5.5" high / 1.2" wide

Mid Size: M&P45 ((MS)Compact Slide / Fullsize Frame)
M&P45: 7.55" long / 5.5" high / 1.2" wide

Compact: M&P45c
M&P45c: 7.55" long / 5" high / 1.2" wide

Sub-Compact: G30
G30: 6.88" long / 4.80" high / 1.27" wide (slide)

Sub-Compact SlimLine: G36
G36: 6.96" long / 4.76" high / 1.10" wide (slide)

According to Glock's catalog they do not manufacture a compact 45 Auto. And S&W doesn't manufacture a sub-compact 45 Auto.
All dimensions were taken directly from the manufacturers catalogs and all Glock dimensions are for Gen4 except the G36.

If you want cranky, I'll give you cranky.
The Glock was re-invented by an Austrian shovel-maker who peddled his "service pistol for Dummies" to anyone who felt their recruits were incapable of handling the manipulation of a manual safety.
Smith & Wesson deserves some credit in their attempt to ditch the Glock "dirty dingus" trigger for something more anatomically correct.

Seems to me that comparing by the "class" assigned by the manufacturer is far more arbitrary than going by actual dimensions and weight. If I call myself a "middleweight" can I box in the 160 lb class even if I weigh 180? (No I don't box...or weigh 180)

Thank-goodness we all don't like the same thing.........................................there wouldn't be enough to go around..:p:p

I see glock as a company that makes a firearm that works. I looked at them, tried to like them, and I've never seen one jam... But I just don't like them. They're ugly.

I've never seen a Beretta jam, either, except in times of misuse (defective magazine, never cleaning them, springs over 5 years old and don't meet army standards anymore)... I carried the Beretta 92 (the army calls it an m9) in Iraq. I think they look good and operate fine, and that's the reason I chose the Beretta 92fs as my 9mm.

I have no experience and no opinions on the s&w m&p pistols. If they're up to par in accuracy and reliability with glock, I'll choose the s&w.

A friend of mine is a retired cop. He couldn't qualify with the s&w when his department switched from revolvers to automatics. Georgia standards said you need a 70% score on the range, his county said you needed an 80%, and his best scores were around 75%. They handed him a glock and first try he scored 95%. He saw the difference in the rifling when he disassembled the guns, the glock was radically more accurate. So, if next year happens to time warp us back to 1992, I'll choose glock. Until then I like Beretta for 9mm, s&w revolvers, or Sig, kimber, and s&w in the 1911 department.

But I won't agree, disagree, or trash talk anyone's glock or s&w decisions, because I assume they're both quality products (I know glock is, and I don't think s&w makes a piece of junk)

1st of let me start by apologizing. I for some reason had a hair across my a** last night and after reading several posts of "I'm looking for a new "Compact" G27 vs M&P40c" and I got all wound up about it. Any ways I guess my issue was not comparing the models but the terminology. I guess to me it's the same as "I'm looking for a new "full size" truck, Silverado vs Ranger". I also never bashed a particular brand , I love my M&P and I have tried so hard to like Glocks, as I appreciate their firearms but I just cant find one that is comfortable in my hand. It always feels like I'm holding the fat end of a baseball bat. Just a few days ago I looked at a G29 Gen4, again it felt like holding a block. Well at least we have the full size comparison laid out now. lol.No I will go back to my corner.

Anecdotal storys of a "known to you only cop" really doesn`t prove anything.. M&P`s are shot along side the Glocks in matches all over the country and are having great success. The idea that Glock is radically more accurate is void of facts. I've owned both and now own 3 M&P's and I love them. The Glocks I`ve owned, I've owned 4, have been very good guns yet never fit my grip, when the M&P's came along that was it for the Glocks. My only wish is that aftermarket companies for the M&P's are as numerous as the ones for Glock. Lastly if Glock ever re-designed their guns I would take a good look but I'm not holding my breath. The problem with your argument is "there are no STANDARDS to compare the size in guns" So until their are the argument is moot. You could ask on any forum what constitutes a compact, full size, or sub compact and receive 100 replies and have 100 different answers. You're dealing with personal perceptions...Jim

I like 'em all. Each has it's quirks and stars. I own several Glocks in different flavors and recently picked up an MP9 and 9Shield. Great shooters but to me and my Glock trigger finger I felt the MP triggers kinda sucked. Decided to fix that with the Apex FSS kits, and voila, like magic, fixed. The Apex actually memics the Glock trigger, even down to the actual trigger itself. ( I know, in their videos they can't mention the "G-word"...) So I guess with a few bucks you can fix anything. Also installed a set of Trijicon HD sights on the MPs, beautiful upgrade. Really never thought they'd make that much difference, but I was wrong, it happens.

I would consider the M&Pc in the same class as the G26/27.
Shield is in its own class.
J.M.O.

Sinkhole, I for one appreciate all the effort it must have taken to gather all that data. I am typical, in that the glocks just don't give me the warm fuzzies when I pick one up. I don't have anything negative to say about them, I just will always pick a S&W over them, given the choice. My Shield practically melted in my hand when we first met, now I take her everywhere with me....

Its all good.

I also appreciate your compiling the info for comparison. Actually I thought it was kind of interesting, being a data-driven kind of guy.

FWIW I didn't assume you were bashing Glock, or S&W, but the terminology thrown around, and I get that.

As a new shooter, kind of hard to wade through 'compact' 'full size' etc. without quantifying.

My Glock.

It has BTDT.

I figure, that is good enough for me. :D

It just came a couple hundred miles south, after a trip to Glock for a rebuild.

Imagine what that gun has seen.
