I've been planning to buy a new pistol and was looking at 9mm and .45 autos but I happened across the Taurus 608 with the 6.5" barrel. It's not what I was originally looking for but...

I don't know what came over me, whether it is the stainless finish, its "don't mess with me, I eat glocks for lunch" looks, the 8 round cylinder, the ported barrel or the combination of all of the above...

I decided I probably ought to confess to my lust over here and ask for guidance before giving into temptation and buying it.

I hear good and bad about Taurus but man, that is a sexy gun. Thoughts?

Don't feel bad about buying a Taurus. And, who cares what people here think!!! I recently traded a S&W revolver for a Taurus and some cash! Like all guns, S&W or Taurus..................they come and they go! Is the 608 a 357?

I had a 608 that I liked but didn't shoot it much and wound up trading it. I never had any problems with it but heard internet rumors they go out of time easy, don't know about that.
Yes, they are .357 mag.

I got this a few years ago for $200.00. The kid I bought it from said it hadn't shot a whole box of .357s since he had bought it new. It was o.k., however it wasn't like a S&W. I gave it to my son a couple years ago and he keeps it loaded with snake shot. It's kind of pretty and it would confuse anyone counting shots.

My only experience with a Taurus is my sons .22 revolver. I forget the model number, but it's a nine round gun.

It has a very, very, stiff trigger pull compared with my Model 18. My daughter in law hates shooting his revolver, but loves my Model 18.

That doesn't give me a good impression of Taurus, but it's only one example. A friend of mine has a Taurus semi auto and says that it's pretty good.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a gun because of the name, but I'd want to shoot it first if the manufacturers reputation was uneven.

Thanks guys, here's the gun - sorry about leaving out the caliber and pertinent details. The 608 is in .357 and comes in a 4" & 6.5" barrel.
MODEL 608 .357 MAG. REVOLVER

Grabagun and Bud's both have it for $534.

If the reviews on youtube and Bud's are to be believed, it sounds like a good buy... but I have gotten the best advice from this forum so I figured y'all might have opinions. :)

look at resale, not just price but how long they sit waiting for a buyer.
ive never owned one, a buddy of mine had one and was always defending it ,(even when no one was arguing with him) saying it was as good as s&w...then he sold it and got a s&w.

I'd look at a S&W 686 and compare the two. Then I'd find a used Smith for a similar price and buy it instead.1.Its a higher quality gun.2.If you decide to sell at some point, the Smith will have increased in value and the Taurus will have sunk.

I didn't mention it but I paid $200 from a guy years ago for my 608. I traded it at a dealers and he gave me three hundred plus credit on it as it was an 8 shot N frame size gun. It didn't last long in his case either.
That was one case where a Taurus was a good buy and gained value.

I have a 608 as you describe. I got it after owning a model 44 for several years (44 mag). They share the same frame, and look exactly alike. I also own an older model 441 (44spl) and I am very fond of all 3 of them. As far as Taurus service goes, my experience has been incredibly good and also quite bad (communication) but they have never disputed a repair, and they have new leadership who has vowed fixing customer relations issues. For comparison, the very worst I have experienced was Browning, which rates a -12 on a scale of 1-10. Communication was the only problem with Taurus. The guns have been great, but needed to be sent in from time to time, about like my many S&W's.

Thanks everyone for your input and advice! Stay warm out there!

I have a M85UL that is in my carry rotation. Good solid .38 snub. Other posters are correct on it's losing value, but I only care how well it works. My son had the same model and had to send it in twice for repair. So, just like Smiths, good ones and bad. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one...

My friend, Dead Bob (he's dead and his name was Bob), sold me a 4" stainless .357 for $200 years ago. It has become the weapon of choice for the ladies in the house. It's simple, it's easy to care for and it works just fine. The bolt stop could be a little more tightly fit on its pivot but it carries up well, is in time and doesn't shave. It is what it is, an inexpensive Model 66 clone. It's the nightstand gun here.

My daughter, incidentally, has learned to shoot with it and she prefers it to some of the more finely finished and expensive articles in the armory.

First of all the Taurus is only so so in quality. Some good some bad.

Second a ported gun is worth less than a non-ported gun for a reason. Most people don't care for them. Having that muzzle blast come up in front of your face is distracting and not good for second shots.

Third buy a very good to excellent used Ruger Security Six for a hundred dollars less and spent the money you save on a quality holster and/or some ammo. You will have a better revolver for less money. The only down side is you get six shots and not eight. You could even get a couple of speed loaders with the money you save.
