How I miss my 586.......

I know how you feel. After my dad passed away in 1990, my mom gave me his service revolver, a 4" 586. He took such good care of it, it looked almost brand new.

A few years ago my brother came out to vist. After a day at the range, we were at home cleaning guns and he commented I should give him one of my 1911's. I told him he may be my brother, but I don't like him that much. But I offered him our dad's gun as a loaner (he mistook it as a "keeper").

I realized later that I had messed up, I really missed that gun. So a couple of months ago, I traded him one of my 1911's for "my" 586.

I took it to the range a couple of weeks ago and "made up for lost time". It's a sweet shooting pistol...

So I understand how you feel. It's one of a couple of guns I'll have till I pass on.

That is a real......

That is a real horror story that cut me to the bone. Especially thinking that the exact same terrible thing could happen here. I have a 686 that I dearly love.

I don't know what the availability of 586s are in NZ. My advice would be to find a decent one, buy it, and enjoy it while you search for your dream gun. My 6" is admittedly nose heavy but i have big rubber grips to give me something to hang on to. And maybe write John Bull and tell him he should at least compensate you for your loss. I hope you end up with a closetful of nice guns.

Pet a kiwi for me.

Speedyquad…. Promise me right now that you will never ever let that gun go! Hear me now, my ancestors had great magical powers, and I hereby lay my promise that if you do so much as think about selling it, you will be visited by a plague of rabid armpit dwelling fleas… Seriously, do not let that one go. And I’m sorry that it comes with such a sad tale of loss.

it will be a family heirloom...it goes to my oldest daughter. she is 12 and she knows that it is not to be sold. i told her that if she sells it, my ghost will haunt her until she reacquires it. so you have my promise.

A person has to have special permission to import a gun (they have to prove they cant easily get the same one from within NZ, cost regardless!) so if I already had one, even a ratty one, I would never get the go ahead to import another. As it is, I have to gamble that I WILL get the go ahead when I buy one, as I could be left high and dry. Pistol shooting is still okay here, but getting the gun that you want is VERY expensive, and sometimes impossible almost. 586’s do come up for sale, but a MINT one in 4”, well it could be next month or in ten years. All very frustrating. Looking at what is available to you guys in the US, well its like being a kid with no money looking through the window of the best sweet store in the world!
As for compensation, some of us did get some, but not full value. Also, how do you compensate someone for taking away their rights, their enjoyment etc! That was seventeen long years ago…. I’ve been in NZ for seven years, so basically I missed out on ten years of shooting ANY sort of pistol, let alone my 586…! I also had a Browning .22 match, and have never even SEEN one since, let alone fired one. That was my very first pistol, just prior to my 586. I would love one of those too, but chances are I will never see one again.
I will however be getting back a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 7 1/2:” . I kept all my reloading gear, and hundreds of cases, projectiles etc. They are sitting waiting to be used, and have been since 1997.
I’ll post some pics on the forum as soon as I can.

Some lovely responses here, what a great forum.

UPDATE

How I miss my 568… UPDATE

Well, I have bought (buy now) a 586 on GB. Just need to sort out the details now, and get the paperwork in order. I’m so nervous, as I am buying a gun without seeing it in the flesh, and the process I have to go through (and the expense) to get it to New Zealand...phew!.

A few days ago I bid on one but lost out, and to be honest the bidding ran away with me, so in the end I was a little glad I was outbid, knowing that I had gone way overboard. Anyway, this time it is a little more sensible, although most of you guys here would probably not think so, given what I have read you all seem to pay for these.
I am in a different situation however, being in a country that has little choice (few pistols to choose from), so it is a big deal to me. Also, to pay a hundred, or maybe even two or three hundred over the normal price isn’t so bad when you look at the bigger picture, and when you think that just the shipping alone will cost an extra $500
I really dont want to be one of those guys who pushes up the price of stuff for everyone else, and Im not rich, but I just felt I had to get my girl back again... well one of her sisters maybe :D

Anyway, I hope it turns out well. The guy who I am buying from has really great feedback, and I will definitely post of my experience when its all over and the dust has settled. In fact I will write a complete in depth blog, and plenty of pics of course.

As for the gun, well she looks good to me. The only difference I can see at this point is that she had a combat (smooth) trigger, whereas mine had a serrated one if I remember correctly (it was 17 years ago).

As a matter of interest, one member of the forum sent me an offer of a 586 just after my first posting. He also sent some pics after I contacted him. However, when I asked a few questions, only as I was trying to validate the information (seeing as I was looking to send over $700 on trust), he never replied back. I emailed twice more, and not even a peep. Why would someone do that?

Anyway, that aside, I am all excited now thinking about getting my old gun back, or as near as I can that is! I wonder what our first meeting will be like… should I bring roses?:)

Now if only I could find a Ruger Super Redhawk to throw in the same shipment, I would be over the moon!

Watch this space!

i'm glad you found one at a price that works for you!

i was watching a ruger super redhawk that was for sale locally...i kept telling my wife that if i had the spare money for it, it would be mine...now that i have enough spare $$$, it is no longer available...oh well, such is life...

Thank you...
Oh yes, I know the "spare cash" situation as you describe. When I got the compensation from the government for the guns they stole, I vowed I would save it until I was somewhere I could buy back the same model guns and shoot again!
Well you know how that story ends I’m sure LOL. Its took me a long time to get into a situation where I can shoot legally again, that is I had to emigrate! The cost of that, selling up, moving to the other side of the world, starting over…. Well it didn’t come cheap! But hopefully soon, I will once again have a fine example of a S&W 586 in my hands, and I really just can’t wait!:D

Sometimes people do things with the best intentions but for some reason it doesn't work out that way. Perhaps they decided they couldn't part with it but whatever the reason they should have just said so. At least no harm was done...just a bit frustrating.

Thrilled to hear you have one on the way and look forward to a follow up report. If this thread has gone inactive by that time please find it and continue to post on it so others can read the whole story. ;)

I intentionally didn't post any pics so as not to tease but I will trade 586 pics when you post...I have a couple you might like!:)

Congrats! From one 586 lover to another, I'm really happy you finally found one. Your story makes me think I need to quit finding excuses not to spend more time at the range... Sometimes it's easy to forget how easy or good one has it until we lose it. I hope you have a lot of fun reacquainting yourself with your new 586!

...i kept telling my wife that if i had the spare money for it, it would be mine...now that i have enough spare $$$, it is no longer available...oh well, such is life...

Yeah... I know that story. It gets worse as the years go by too... I remember some of those guns I let slip by because I just couldn't afford (or justify) spending that much at the moment. I look at the going prices now and wish I had taken out a loan and bought three of everything I looked at more than twice!

Update... trying to pay for my 586 purchase is a nightmare!!! I have the cash, seller wont trust me with account details so that I may wire it to him....Aggggh!!!!

Had to pay a third party, so they can them pay him..... so frustrated right now. Should have been a quick done deal, but noooooo...!

Will update again as soon as I know whats happening.

Gads but I hope you get some satisfaction. You're overdue.

Gosh I hope so too. Its been nearly impossible, and i'm only at the start of it all. I really couldnt understand why someone wouldnt give out a simple bank account number, so that I could pay him. This is just common practice. Maybe its different in the US to every other country, I really dont know. If so, how the hell do you guys do any international business, or even purchase anything from abroad?
I gave the seller everything I had as far as ID, and all I wanted to do was wire money into his account... i just dont get it!
I have dealt with people in umpteen different countries, and always either I or they have to give bank account details, depending on who wants to receive the payment. Seriously, is it that different in the US?.... It cant be, as the FFL dealer gave me his details, which I promptly paid into.

Im at a loss what to think really.:(

there is a scam going on that has people "sending money" to buy a high dollar item and then telling them that after the money clears the bank, someone will come pick up the item. sometimes the item is shipped out before the seller realizes no money was actually transferred.

the original contact is from email and displays very poor, and broken english. here is an initial contact email that i received last week from someone on a reptile cage/stand that i have listed online locally...

"i'm interested in the said price and would you accept a check as payment once it clears your bank then I will have someone to pick up?"

that was the complete email.

If it starts to smell fishy...walk away!! There are other 586's!

I wasn’t even after credit details, just “a” bank account to pay into! International transfers are standard banking practice, and given all of the very detailed ID (and a police reference) that i had supplied, it was ridiculous to not supply a bank account number to accept a payment! Never mind, its all underway now..... I hope!

It wasn't me smelling the fish. Did all I could to put the sellers mind at rest, but guess he was just VERY mistrusting of a foreigner (English guy). Oh well, never mind.

Wish you luck in getting your 586. It is still chilling to me that the government of our greatest ally and one of the few protectors of Western Civilization decided to go this route and take firearms away from good citizens. I sincerely hope that one day the handgun ban will be overturned.

There’s little chance of that. If any MP even suggested that, it would be political suicide. Even the few pro shooting sports MP’s wouldnt even dare cross that bridge. Think about it.
That my friends is the reason you cannot afford to let your liberties slip away, because it is sometimes dam impossible to get them back again.
