4014 conversion to 10mm

I am looking for a source where i can send my 4014 barrel and have it rechambered and headspaced for 10mm. If anyone has a rechambering tool and headspace tool they would like to rent to me that would be great too. I would pay shipping both ways. thanks for any info you can give me.

There is a lot more to it than just re-chambering. First, have you even tried to load 10mm ammunition into the magazine?

Besides overall length you have to remember Smith .40 cals started life as a 9mm design. Bumping up to .40 cal for the most part did not reveal any design weaknesses. Now you want to bump up even further? That sounds like trouble to me.

Thanks! that thread has some good info. my "gunny" is compiling all this information and is going to let me know whether or not it will be a reliable conversion. Thanks for the input.

The 4013, 4014, 4053, and 4554 are built on the 4516 frame. So they started life as a 45acp. The magazine is 45 length with a spacer to shorten it 40 length. Ream the chamber pop the spacer out of the mag. Replace the recoil spring with an + power Wolf spring and you have 10mm.

The 40S&W was not born out of the 9MM. It is a shortened 10MM. Derived from the FBIs downloaded ammunition specifications.

It is true that many of the current firearms chambered for the 40S&W cartridge started life as 9MM platforms, that has no relation on cartridge development.

The 4013/4014/4053/4054 are all 10MM platform firearms. They have 10MM magazines with spacers for the shorter cartridge and they have 10MM ejection ports.

There are at least a dozen of the 1013s in-use by Forum members, some for over a year now. Reliability is not an issue with the conversion.

If you want another easy conversion, it is the Mauser M2. Rechamber the barrel and pull the spacers from the magazine. No need to change springs since it is a rotating barrel design. It shoots softer than most 40s

Just recently converted a 4053 to 10mm. I was able to find/purchase an unused 40S&W barrel and slide to use for the conversion.
The 10mm slide and barrel uses the "nested" double recoil spring and is fitted with the OEM inner spring and a 21lb outer spring. (short action/bbl Wolff recoil spring #47721)
Along with the re-chambering, additional changes included switching to a slightly shorter ejector lever, and removing the spacer from the magazines. Also purchased a couple of S&W 9 round single stack 10mm mags, which work fine after the tab is removed.....although they extend out of the frame a bit.
The only problem for me has been the recoil spring arrangement...the gun is a bear to get open! (for a geezer) Recoil with 180gr practice ammo seems about the same as the 40 and is very manageable.
Haven't shot it with "duty" ammo, but I suspect that the recoil spring might have to be slightly heavier if heavier loads are used. With the spring arrangement listed above, shooting the 180gr practice ammo (1100fps) the slide just barely makes it to the slide lock on the last round.

That's what I'm referring to. Taking a gun that started life as a 9mm, then stretching it to a 40 and trying to take THAT to 10 sounds like a bomb waiting to go off.

Having said that I stand corrected in this case. I was not aware the base gun started on the 4516 frame. That frame and design should be able to take 10mm abuse. BUT as one poster mentioned the recoil springs for a short barrel 10 are tight to say the least.
