Byron Smith verdict.

I know, I know. And I agree. On the other hand, he was in his home. The kids broke the law by forcibly entering his home.

Marsh is right. This is bizarre. I don't know about the "finishing shot" business, but if my house had been burglarized several times, I'd probably have a firearm close at hand whenever I was home.

Weird stuff. He'll definitely have a lot of time to think things over.

The kids had been in his house before. They had broken into other houses before. I'm not sure how much of that the jury got to hear. They looked like nice kids, at least in the pics the press kept showing.

Still, he laid an ambush for them. He had tarps laid out already to wrap their bodies in. He made audio and video recordings of the whole episode, plus, apparently, of his preparations. His own video was pretty much what convicted him.

Yep, I think when you add all that up, it's pretty obvious the ol' guy's a half bubble off plumb.

How many times was he burglarized-what aid from LE did he receive? There are some folks who can be pushed to the limit when the sanctity of their domicile is violated. We don't know how this worked on him-how it may have dominated his thoughts-waiting to have his home broken into again. And where is the pathology? Was he a violent, confrontational man, with a history of this kind of trouble? A little role reversal can really shed some light on a deal like this. Just go back and review the facts of the case and apply them to your self, and see where that would leave you. I would have made such an issue out of it that the authorities would have had to do something-but that's me.

Applying the Mozambique routine to a subject who fails to go down from the first two is a valid defensive shot. Standing over somebody for a "coup de grace" is elimination with extreme prejudice, AKA murder. I understand why he did it, but in a nation of laws it's still murder.

Okay, he killed two, how is he hit with four murders? He hung himself but soon the two kids will be canonized. I have trouble with getting past the fact these kids have burglar`ed smith and others a number of times.
When it gets to the point where you are afraid to leave the house figuring its going to get hit again would help to drive you over the edge.
I read he claimed he was burglared close to a dozen times. A third youth also was found guilty in the past and claimed the boy had given him enough money to buy a ATV for helping him hitting smiths house and others. I guess for smith it was a case of overkill. I wouldnt have done it, all the same I am glad I wasnt on that jury!

The conviction appears righteous to me but it will no doubt be appealed.

Marsh is correct that this is a bizarre case. Executing burglars after they are down is a little extreme.:eek::eek:

Extreme??? No, it's sadistic, and sociopathic, and cruel. He mocked that girl as she lay dying...that is so sick it beggars description. :(

This guy gives a bad name to anyone who believes in the right of self-defense...

I understand his having a firearm at hand. I can even understand shooting someone who breaks into your home. But executing someone who no longer poses a threat to you? Mocking someone who is in agony and mortally wounded? No excuse for that whatsoever...none. :(

Looks like he was looking for an excuse to kill somebody to me.

Your post reminded me of something...

A good friend of mine was a Captain in the US Army in the mid-1970s, commanding a basic training company. He asked a new recruit, just starting basic training, why he joined the Army. The kid told him, seriously, that he had always wanted to kill people, and the best way to do that legally was to join the military. My friend immediately moved to have the young man discharged.

There are some really sick people out there, folks who enjoy taking life. Apparently Byron Smith is one of them. :(

Mozambique

I'm not familiar with this term. Could someone elaborate. It didn't come up on the Google.

This is a shooting technique where two rounds are placed center of body mass and third round is a head shot.

Was he crazy? Probably.
How did he get that way? Twelve break ins might do it.
Why couldn't the police stop this madness?
I don't agree with his style of home protection but there are unanswered questions here. Sad situation for all involved.
