Which M&P Is Best Value?

I'm looking to get another AR and I have decided to get a S&W. So far, I'm leaning toward the Sport as it looks like the most value for the price. I know that it doesn't have a dust cover nor a forward assist. I plan to put a red dot on it. Any reasons that I should get another M&P?

Take it from a recovering 15-Sport modification addict, buy the M&P 15 model that is equipped with all the features you want right out of the box. It's cheaper over the long term. If all you want is a light K.I.S.S. Rifle and to mount a dot up top, the 15-Sport is the way to go.

Best value is the Sport. Everything you need, nothing you don't and you can find it everywhere these days. Locally on sale for $599 around here.

It's a forced recovery. There isn't anything left to change on my 15-Sport other than to install a full featured upper receiver. The only stock parts left on my 15-Sport are:

• The barrel.
• The muzzle device
• The barrel nut.
• The upper receiver
• The buffer tube
• The castle nut
• The stripped lower.
• The magazine catch & mag release button
• Misc little springs, detents, takedown & pivot pins.

The 15-Sport has good bones to support mods.

LOL.

I've been eyeballing a Smith Enterprises Vortex flash eliminator, but have no overriding reason to get one. I'm not obsessive about muzzle flash. Until it wears out, I'm not swapping the barrel. I've got an early production 15-Sport with the Thomson Center, 1:8 5R progressive gain twist, Melonite treated barrels. If I swapped out to a full featured upper receiver, it wouldn't be a 15-Sport anymore.

I did just order a full auto PSA BCG that has every testing acronym associated with it. It is on sale for $89 and I used a 10% off coupon. I'm slowly building up the parts for a 300 AAC Blackout upper build.

The conversation tangent I'm engaged in with bhayles supports the position I stated earlier. The 15-Sport is a great rifle. The 15-Sport's foundation is excellent. If you're looking for a keep it simple rifle, the 15-Sport is excellent. If on the other hand:

1. Your budget is greater than the cost of a 15-Sport...

AND

2. You have the slightest inkling that you'll start modifying/accessorizing your rifle beyond what most people would consider normal...

...it is best to buy an AR-15 (S&W or other brand) that is equipped from the factory with as much of the goodies that you want on it straight out of the box. It's cheaper over the long run.

Oh don't bother trying to catch up. I went beyond stupid in trying out parts and upgrades on my 15-Sport. It was bad.

He's not a relapser, he's an enabler and has succeeded in dragging others down with him. Not me, just saying. Although the Lantac Dragon is looking pretty good, and the KNS anti rotation pins do work rather well, still debating on the RRA Varmint trigger, the Troy Alpha rail has worked out really well, now what was that other thing I was looking at? But not me, I'm not affected, no way. I'm told denial is the first sign of a problem, but I don't have a problem.....YET.

Sorry for moving off topic. JaPes is right though, the Sport is an awesome rifle, but if you plan on decking it out, an OR or a T might be a better option. They will have fewer things to swap out, hence saving you a few bucks that could be used for ammo.

The only thing left on my Sport is the lower receiver with buffer tube and the barrel. That should just about do it for me. Now I will start stocking up on more ammo.

Agreed, OR is a great deal, esp with the rebate. Nothing wrong with a Sport, but if you are one who wants the a FA, Dustcover, and interchangeable trigger guard, then the OR is a heck of a deal.

On the other hand, if you want a fully rigged out Tactical Rifle, and the parts associated with it are to your liking, the VTAC II is a great deal as well for all you get with it.

I already have a Rock River carbine. I guess I'm a little different in my ideas of the AR. The original design of the AR-15/M-16 was to have a lightweight rifle (7-8 lbs) and the ammo for the rifle was lighter and took up less space. That's what I like, a lightweight carbine.
Somewhere along the way, people started adding all kinds of accessories and hanging all kinds of stuff from their rifles. Now these rifles with all the "improvements" have made some of these rifles weigh 10-12 lbs, maybe more. What happened?
The M&P Sport looks like a lot of rifle for the money. I'm not going to a jungle to fight and I don't need to protect a mall so I just want a plain ol' carbine.

If you just want a plain, simple carbine then the Sport is the one from S&W for you. Simple as they come.
