I am currently shooting a 625JM right now in USPSA, but I want a 8-shot gun to shoot minor PF with. I also dont want to add ay more caliber's to my reloading process so I am ruling out any .38 Super Guns. I already load 9mm and .38's so its between the 627 and 929. I have a Ghost holster that will fit any N frame and the James austin moonclip server which will hold all size moonclips. Any opinions on which gun I should get? The only thing I don't like about the 929 is the barrel length, I would prefer a 4 or 5 inch. Also, with the 627, is the PC worth the extra money, I can do my own action job if that is the only advantage. I am also worried about finding a load to make 125 PF with .38 Special.

The 9 will load faster and more consistently than any .38 Special. You can load .38 Short Colt brass for the 627 to get the same short cartridge advantage, but 9mm brass is way cheaper. As I see it, if you are buying new, the 929 wins hands down.

The 9 will reload faster due to clips for autoloaders being much thicker and more rigid than the 38/357 clips. The Titanium cylinder of the 929 will allow faster lock time with less peening of the bolt notches, this is due to the greatly reduced mass of the Ti cylinder.

You can always go both ways with a second cylinder. My factory unfluted stainless cylinder is 357 Magnum while the second black fluted cylinder is 9x23 Winchester.

As to PC vs. Production, it is kind of like saying is a Z28 worth the money over a Camaro because you can do the paint job.

Performance Center firearms are made on different CNC mills using different code that has been written by the PC. The tooling is changed more frequently to keep tolerances tighter, the barrels are air guaged, match grade barrels some of the offering are provided with barrels from Lothar-Walther. Features, innovations and configurations are offered from the Performance Center that could not be cost effectively produced on the production side.

There are advantages to PC guns, like cut rifling. The 929 also has a 1 in 10 twist and being actually chambered for 9mm doesn't have the really long bullet jump to the chamber throat we run into with short colt rds in 357 mag chambers.

As to being "worried about finding a load to make 125 PF with .38 Special", it's a non-issue in a gun made for 357 mag pressure levels.

Yea I think I'm going to continue to try to get the 929 for a while. Im going to purchase a 627 as well, I just cant decide between the 5" PC or the 4" Pro Series. I can do the action work myself, so I dont really see an advantage to spending an extra $250 on the PC. I know the 5" PC will be more accurate, but the Pro Series will be a more accurate gun than I can shoot anyways. Thoughts???

I like 5 inch barrels. I'd pay the extra money just for that.

I went thru this. I bought a 4" Pro. Never liked it. Ended up selling it and getting two 5" PC 627-5's. One has iron sights, one a ported barrel and a C-more...

Now there's the 929, another decision...

If you wanted to make plans for a match any time this year, I'd recommend you get a 627. Unless you have some inside connection, it would be a very big *if* as to whether you're going to see a 929 anytime soon.

For me, the 627 is preferable to a 929, because the 627 is more versatile a gun, with the multiple caliber options. Not to mention, much better to shoot without moonclips than the 929. And with the thick Hearthco moonclips and matching Starline 38 Short Colt brass, the 627 unloads and reloads very smoothly and reliably.
