Some of you guys are a bad influence. My Sport is awesome, but I think I'm in the mood to build it a buddy. I'm considering making this a Yankee Hill Machine build, top to bottom. I know there are the usual suggested suppliers, PSA, DD, Spikes, and others, but the parts I've seen from YHM seem to be top notch. This may run a few bucks more than usual, and will be an "as time and money allows" kind of thing, but it will be what I want the way I want it.

I'm thinking their 16" QPQ melonite treated barrel, YHM 100 caliber marked upper, YHM 126 lower kit, YHM 9384 gas block, and their BCG. That puts me at about 8 bills, add miscellaneous small parts and furniture, I think about $1200 should tie it all up. I've already got a shop with tools at my disposal, so those cost will be reduced.

What do you think, worth the time and effort?

This is coming from an absolute newbie to ARs. I've had mine about 6 weeks or so. With that said...

If I was going to build a gun the single absolute MUST for me would be a quality 80% lower. I'm kinda a 2nd Amendment nutjob. :D

WHAT 80% lower? I dunno. I'm not near the "build one" stage so I haven't researched it and don't know who makes good ones vs who makes quality...but I'll find out when the time comes.

I enjoy my 300 Blackout emmensely however I use it simply as a supersonic plinkster and am not interested in "cans" or crawling in the mud at midnight (been there-done that). The 300 is just different enough from a 5.56 that it has it's own charisma and is accurate to boot. Shoot one and then decide if it is for you. Also, I use cheap pulled 147 gr bullets and have a ball reloading the cartridge.

My new Sport needs a buddy too, but I'm just gonna buy it a Colt E6920.

Just what fer.

Probably keep the Colt as a safe queen to give to one of my grandkids in a few years and use the Sport as a plinker.

300blk is real fun, but if you are going to shoot it much, it's best to reload. I recently acquired one in trade and it shoots great, but factory ammo is high. I bought a set of 300blk dies shortly after buying a box of factory ammo @ $37 for 20. I am still working on loads, but this is 5 shots at 100 yards.

I liked it.

Not really.

I got a YHM 7810 (complete upper and sights) for $650 on sale from Primary Arms. They'll be running another sale.

As far as I know they get their BCG from Stag. It's not HPT or MPI. You can get HPT and MPI from Stag for an extra $5. Big deal, eh?:D They get their barrels somewhere... I forget... but they do a nice job of flute and finish. I like YHM spectre length handguards, low profile gas block and end cap. Makes for a nicely finished rifle. Their sights are ok... nothing special.

I have a YHM rimfire can too. The guys at YHM are good to do business with. They seem like a no-nonsense bunch.

I like mine.

If you are still considering YHM... Primary Arms has complete uppers on sale. They have three different ones. After discount 600-700.

I got their notice and saw that. Just wish the budget could have accommodated one. :( Since I forgot to buy that winning lottery ticket last night, it's going to be stashing a piece at a time, at least for now.

Thanks for the heads up Phil, at least someones looking out for me. :D

Welcome. There will be another sale... there always is. :D

Hey Gunny, you still kicking around the idea of a YHM?

Here's a sale. YHM 7800 upper.
YHM price $934
Primary Arms regular price $788
Primary Arms Fathers Day price $574

Coupon Code: FDYHM7800

The value of your fulfillment? The challenge of spec'ing a nice weapon, integrating parts you got for a deal, and the challenge of the build. Priceless! Two AR-15 are better than one. Maybe it is a Sport with an Eotech sight, and a Home built YHM with a 3-9x40. Nothing like having a choice.

"Do or Do Not," a Priceless Choice. Approval is your own, and we shall share your joy with the reporting of the gun's first shot.

For a lower look at NoDak Spud. They advertise they hold pretty tight tolerances on their lowers to reduce the play between upper and lower. They have some A2 lowers right now.

I'm going down the same path. I'm into history so I'm working on a retro A1 style AR like the ones I used to see on the nightly news when I was a kid in the late 1960s. However, I plan to upgrade the upper/barrel with the current mechanicals such as M4 feed ramps and a more modern barrel twist. Still deciding on barrel configuration, and I might go with a "better" barrel that is less likely to flex than the original profile just for the sake of accuracy.

I'm still leaning in that direction, but I'm afraid those plans are hold for now. Looks like I'm going in for bypass surgery on Tuesday, so I may be absent for a day or two. :( This won't help the budget much either.

Sucks, doesn't it? I have three surgeries in the next two weeks and its gonna cut into my ammo budget a good bit, dammit!
