The Really Old Chief's Special Thread

I might as well stick my old one in this thread, even though I recently posted it.

SN 38953, probably late 1953 or 1954.

Has anybody seen the pre model 36 3" Nickel with a red box in
Carol Watson's Orange Coast Auction?

The recent acquisition of the half moon January '52 Baby (factory re-finish) filled out the Chiefs Special section of my Centennial Catalog collection. The other Chief is a smooth ramp model, and the Airweight is a '53 with the aluminum cylinder.

The blade definitely looks taller on both AWs George. May have something to do with the light weight and recoil affecting point of aim- impact. But then at the distances these were designed to be used, I can't imagine it would matter too much. Lee

What is a Model 53? Do you chief guys have your own models?
Is it the elongated trigger guard year?

Bought this around the same time I got my .32 Safety Hammerless. It's not perfect but I think it is all original. Is this the last of the flat latch models?

That's a beauty and the whole package! Yes its is the last flat latch, 3rd style, a J frame Model 30-1 made between Jan 1961 and 1966.

Thanks, Jim! I came here originally when I was looking for information on High Standard "space guns" but this IS a Smith & Wesson forum so I thought I would join in with a couple of mine.
