The 'unofficial' 58 Club

...I would put a "Like" on your post IF you had screwed a Model 57 barrel to the 58....but it is a nice gun....

whitecoyote....what is the frame marked? 657? Looks like someone shortened a 657 and beadblasted it...very nice...

Yes it's a 657 cut down. Done by Mag-Na-Port.

Ironically Superman, I originally sent out a 4" model 57 barrel but it was one of the very early lazy "&" barrels with the pinned in front sight and not conducive to the project thus the switch to the 25 barrel and 45 Colt.

Nice guns guys... I need to send my 3" 657 to Magn-Na-Port and just have it bead blasted like that. It is already ported...

Bob,

I like that bullet! I may have to look into that for my next .41 mold purchase. Below are two of my current favorite .41 molds. The first is an MP Molds 410-200, that I have used both Lyman #2 and 1-20 alloys with. It casts at 212-215 grains depending on alloy.

The second mold is by Accurate Molds and is a SWC Keith type bullet. I asked Tom at Accurate if he could get it around 225 grains for me with 1-20 alloy and that is what I get.

I haven't shot either of these from my M58 yet (I know, I know), but the MP Molds bullet with either 5.0 grains of Clays, or 8.0 grains of Unique out of my M57 is a very nice shooting bullet. The Clays load is great for new shooters. Very soft shooting.

The Accurate Molds bullet is what I have been working up a load for my Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter with, and currently I am using 17.5 grains of 2400. I am still playing with the load. It shoots well, but I think it will do better.

Cheers,

Rick

Found a new bullet for the .41 Magnum that looks good... Accurate Mould #41-215V. Supposed to be a 215 grain flat point that ended up casting out to 207 grain in my alloy. The meplat is .37!!! Almost a wadcutter... Pushed with the standard 8.0 grains of Unique/950 fps this is probably as good as it gets for those who like a low recoiling hardcast bullet for self-defense.

Thanks Ray.

The shirt is from Animal Customs, which does custom jerseys and shirts. Long lead time, about 12 weeks.

Designed the shirt myself with their online design studio. Much cooler than a cotton shirt, the side panels are perforated for cooling.

They have a very extensive library of artwork for the shooting sports and most of the organizations that sponsor the shoots, such as IDPA, ect.

This coming Saturday I will be competing in the VA State IDPA Championship. And no..I won't be shooting the 58. 16 stages and 288 rounds minimum for the match.

Although, I will be competing in Enhanced Service Revolver with a Model 681. With over 160 registered shooters so far, it will be a long day.

A10- Overly powerful ammo was not the only problem with the 58. Go back and read my first post again. The 58 is too big and too heavy. Many cops (including just about all the women officers) find the N frame too large to handle effectively. The trigger reach requires long fingers as does getting a good grip on the gun. The majority of cops packing a gun this size complain about the weight. Yes, the 58 was a single purpose item, but it was not a good design for that intended purpose regardless of caliber. The slow sales and lack of enthusiasm for this model prove this fact.

Given the choice between a Model 10 and a Model 58 for uniform carry I would take a 10 without hesitation. Most would agree with me. The late Tom Ferguson wrote of ditching his issue 58 for the lighter K frame when he had to walk a beat.

i liked the idea of a more powerful round at the time this model came out. One thing for sure, it never became popular with law enforcement.

Re:

M-58 with a round butt, target hammer and who knows what else.

Just bought this from an outfit in Michigan. The salesman said it has NOT been re-blued. I'm skeptical but will find out in a couple of weeks.

If it hasn't been reblued the bottom third of the back of the butt should be shiny silver...

Seriously though I would be interested in seeing it with the grips removed as well. A 3" Roundbutt M-58 has finished in hardchrome has been my dream gun for years. The problem is S&W never made it, and the only Model 58 I had was a first year issue given to me by my grandfather, so cutting on it was out of the question. I just picked up a second one (an N-Series dating to 75-77 timeframe and I plan to have the gun I always wanted built. So I'd like to see what the butt of your pistol looks like without the grips.

Thanks.

No new members in almost 3 months?

So, I lettered my early 58 because it came with TH, TT, and TS. I thought it was a put together job, but it clearly came from the factory outfitted as is.
The red ramp front is painted on.

"Shipped August 21, 1968 to National Sporting Goods Co, Baltimore, MD. The records indicate that the revolver was shipped with a 4 inch barrel, blue finish, target hammer, target trigger, and checkered target grips."

I find this VERY interesting and COOL! :)

Thanks Steve.
I was asked about the Cokes and if they were original. They fit perfectly on the gun, so unless someone can tell me that Cokes were not able to be ordered for a 58, I'd say they're original.

I'm just glad to know that a 58 lettered with any kind of target grips. I purchased my S-serial 58, from the original owner's son, with diamond targets. He claimed they were original, but I always had my doubts...at least now I know it's possible....that they didn't all come with PC Magnas. :)

I've seen your gun and would say those grips are original. It's quite nice btw. :)
Mine has the usual holster wear on both sides of the muzzle, but otherwise is in great shape. The blue is amazing.
I think I paid 650 for mine, the Cokes are worth 300, so 350 for the gun. Not too bad of a deal. I'd never separate the grips from the gun though.
