The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

The extractor is nickel. Only thing I know for sure is it was a trade for an AR-15 to the Sheriff where my wife's Aunt and Uncle lived a while back. Her Uncle worked for the County and knew him personally and the Sheriff really wanted that AR!

I've never heard of a factory nickel plated S&W having the extractor star nickel plated. That's usually an indicator of third party refinish. I guess you can never say never though.

I'm curious about the red plastic insert in the front sight. I have a couple 28s that have this and others that don't? Is that standard or an option or has someone done it aftermarket?

Just noticed post # 1573 by A-10. That explains it!

It's my understanding that m28s were not able to be special ordered with RR/WO from the factory. I know in the 70/80s the craze was to have them. Many folks bought m28s and had the RR installed after market. Just my .02. I haven't seen any documentation to support that RR/WO was a factory option on the m28. Not arguing with A-10, but none of my m28s have them.

I'm guessing your serial number is in the N5XXXXX range? Most all by that time were being shippedvwith the red ramp/white outline rear sights.

I have a 4" 28-2 in that serial number range. It also has the red ramp/white outline sights. It was sold on consignment. The original owner told the seller that it came that way from the factory, but it isn't indicated as such on the box. It also has a target hammer, target trigger, and target stocks.

I'm guessing that the owner sent this gun back to the factory for these mods and has forgotten. If it was done buy a gunsmith, they did a dang nice job. I'm pretty sure the stocks aren't original because they have a date that is a couple of years newer than the gun (unless the gun sat at S&W for a few years before it shipped).

Thank you, Dot!
I have at least two with the red front sight, maybe more. I'll go through the safe and let you know if I have more.

I'm guessin' one of us is gonna have to spring for a letter from Mr. Jinks on one of our RR/WO 28s.....

I've been tempted. I've compared the front sight on my 28-2 to others that I have that I know are original. Zero difference. If this was done after the fact, it was very well done.

Nope! You are correct technically:D It is a 28-2 but they only stamped 28 in the yoke. If you look closely, there is a "27" in smaller font under the "28" so this was originally supposed to be a model 27.

James

Mine is stamped 28 over 27?

Well fellas I would suggest saving your $50. I contacted Mr. Jinks on the SWCA side to ask the following questions:

1. Were RR/WO options available for the model 28?

2. Were these features ever a "standard" option during production as suggested. If so, any idea when this took place?

His response is as follows:

Dan, that statement about red ramp white outline sights on Model 28 is not true. You could send the gun back and have it fit with those sights. When I ran the Service Department and we had walk in service, we did a lot of red ramp front sight and white outline rear sights for New York State Troopers. But the factory kept the Model 28 pretty much as it was introduced. In 1976 they did catalog it with target stocks, but that is the only accessory I remember it being offered with. Roy

It appears the factory would install them....but they were never shipped with them. I wonder if they documented the sight change in the records or not?

That would definitely explain why the RR looked so much like factory ones.....they were, just didn't ship that way.

I just joined this forum. A wealth of information available. Here is my Highway Patrolman 5 screw serial #1150xx. I picked this up yesterday. It needs a good cleaning. Stocks are numbered to gun.

Nice first post! The knowledge here is unsurpassed. Pictures are always welcomed!

28-2, 6"

srv1,
To begin with, I told you wrong, it's stamped 27-2 over 28-2. The serial # is S2754XX and it is an exceptionally accurate gun! I spent the afternoon shooting it and it is a joy! It has the red front sight insert and a black rear sight. It is re-marked 27-2 over 28-2 and has the red front sight but otherwise it is all Highway Patrolman!
Excuse the poor pics.

I'm a little confused. So this is actually a model 27 and not a model 28, correct? Hard to tell from the pictures.

Nice early gun Tom. Welcome to the forum. Was wondering about your stocks numbering to the gun. Normally the target stocks were not numbered, although maybe the unrelieved targets were. Can we see pics of the numbers?

No, it's a 28-2. It has a little better blue than a 28 but the top of the gun is not crosshatched like a 27. It has the flat finish on the rib and trigger guard like a 28 also. One of the odd things to me is that the 27-2 was stamped last? The 28 stamp is really hard to see. I figured some one might have mistaken it for a 27 and did the sight like a 27 in the factory. Don't know?

Added a second 28-2 to the fold

SN N2502XX . Bought this a while back but just now got around to posting pics. The gunshop that I bought a 15-3 from earlier this year sent me an email that they had something I would be interested in. I had told the owner at the time of the 15-3 purchase that I was looking for a nice nickled K or N frame. I assumed that was what he had and jumped inn the car and headed his way.
To my dissapoinment he pulled out this model 28-2. Matching box and most of the goodies it came with. I told him that I already had a nicer one with the correct box and it had the 3 Ts from the factory. I really was focused on a nickled S&W to add to my collection.
I could tell he was surprised I was not interested. We talked a bit and I started to leave but stopped and asked what he wanted for it just for grins and giggles. When he told me $540 I just about broke my arm getting my wallet out of my back pocket. I knew there would not be time to think this over before he sold it to someone else at this price.
The nickled one would have to wait. JA
