Slightly off-topic but relevant: the .22LR is going the way of the 15-inch tire, which I have on my 2003 Buick LeSabre. Got a flat the other day that couldn't be fixed and was unable to find a used replacement. 15-inchers are very scarce. Had to go to the bone yard to find one.

I can't find it locally, but .22 LR is out there, if you keep checking online suppliers. I know that the definition of "good price" will vary person to person, but by setting up some availability notifications, I recently bought Federal, Fed. American Eagle, Remington, etc., online for less than $30 per brick delivered, and CCI Mini Mags in various sized packages for about 13 cents per round delivered. They're often sold out before I get to them, but I've scored enough to keep me shooting, and then some. Not good prices by my (old) personal definition, but since I failed to stock up adequately before it dried up, I've had to rethink my criteria in today's climate. YMMV

I still stop at a local WM on range days. Last week the mgr mentioned that they had not gotten any 22 except some shorts for several weeks. I hadn't seen any, but his comment confirmed that I hadn't missed anything by not being there.

If I am driving by an Academy, Gander Mtn, or the like, and traffic isn't bad, I'll pull in and check just for fun. But most times, there's nothing, sometimes the Federal $20/ 50 stuff, and rarely (yesterday morning was a bonus) there will be a bulk box of some sort.

I still buy what I find, if price/type is ok, but to find as much as I would shoot in a good range afternoon (figure 200-300 rounds, never more than that) over a two-week period is rare.

The sameif I see it. The last timeI bought any .22 was when i bought it from Academy over 2 months ago. I had theie limit of two boxeswhich were the 100 round Remingtons. Well, as I was paying for them, some lady came upand started moaning and groaning that I had two 100 round packs. I bought what Academy was allowing me to buy--nothing more. You woud think the World was ending because -I gained 200 rounds of .22.

I briefly looked at her, then ignored her (she also made an *** of herself in public with other customers laughing at her) and I proceded to open my Big Red Zero--and took a swig as I walked away. When paying, I noticed the sales clerk was looking at her like she just escaped Belleview Hospital.:rolleyes:

Maybe folks are just plain tired of hearing about it and talking about it?

I reckon so, because im sick of it as well. Every timeI walk into a WM, I always walk by the ammo counter--just in case.99% of the time,I dont see anything I want--and I dont need any more 9mm or .45 as I have enough for my purposes.

I sure hope the .22 isnt soon to be extinct. I paid $700++for a crated.22 last year and it's only "spoken" once. Im alsolooking at still getting that Heritage arms SSA Rough Rider .22 later this year. Also,if they finally start gettint those MP-40-22s out--I want one of those as well.

Rhetorician Response

I think people are giving up.

If anything, the situation is getting worse when I consider my usual sources, being WalMart, Cabela's, Academy, and my local range.

There seems to be some more supply in quantity, but in types / prices that either don't work for me or make it expensive enough to not bother trying.

The last box of 300 CCI MiniMag cost about 20% more than I expected at Academy. I think CCI in general is up (it was expected, as I had been warned by a manufacturer rep, but you hate to see the prediction come true).

And for me a certain part of the urgency has gone, as we got the Scout Camp stocked with donations and at-cost resales, and my arthritis is worsening by the day, leaving me to physically be unable to shoot anything some days.

For what it is worth: I bought a 325 brick of 22LR at Academy just this past Thursday for a bit under $20 "out the door!"

I know that is not very cheap but I just buy them whey I can find them. I was going to get the usual two boxes of 50 for about $5 each. When the boy behind the counter said would you like to have a 325 brick? Of course I said "yes!"

FYI! :D

I noticed here recenty--that 22 ammo doesnt seemto be the topic of conversation like it once was? MAYBE that's a good sign? or im wondering if its just that more people are just giving up on looking for it???

I certainly hope so. Then we can get back to woofing on WalMart and threatening a boycott for selling Chinese made junk and not paying a decent wage.

In the for what it is worth category, one LGS "hand" told me another reason why it is so short! Many ARs are being made in the 22lr and they can use up a brick in just a short time.

FYI! :D

I haven't seen any .22 LR at the local Walmarts since about the 2012 elections. The few times I've asked at the local gun shops, it was a minimal supply and expensive. Long before the 2012 elections, I had made it a habit to buy a brick every so often at Walmart. I have enough to go for quite while yet, but I never expected the supply to be this low for this long...

22LR ammo supply hasn't gotten any better and I think people who are out have either decided to stop worrying and chasing it or they have decided to pay much higher prices to have some to shoot.
To me it's not an accident that 22LR is rim fire ammo and one of the only ammo's that reloader's can't reload but that's probably just my way of thinking as a Combat Vietnam Vet.

To be honest, I rarely shot my 22LR before the shortage began. When I was shooting bowling pins, I used a little. Since it's a 500 mile round trip to shoot pins, with gas so high I have stopped that.
I have been able to stockpile a small amount, mainly through my sisters boyfriend who gives me a 100 rnds every so often.
I am much more concerned about the lack of pistol powder.

Found, .22LR Today

I drove the approximately 20 miles to the nearest Academy Sports today, you won't believe it but they had Federal 36 grain, Copper Plated, Hollow Point, 525 round value packs for sale. Only one per customer though and the price was $23.53 which included tax. I know this isn't a great price and I cannot attest to the quality of this round but it was on the shelf and for sale, something very unusual around here lately. Wally World across the street had none! I hope you understand that I'm not boasting just very glad to see .22LR for sale at less than SCALPER prices!

I just plain gave up on finding any locally. I bought a brick online, but ordered it on my lunch hour. Anything left to order by the time I get off work is too expensive for my budget. I was fortunate enough to have quite a bit stocked up when all of this began and have not ran out. It has been easier to find powder, primer, and bullets for what I reload. I have also stopped looking at .22 firearms. No sense in buying something I can't feed.

I think many people have given up as I have. I have better things to do than stand in line at 6AM at Walmart to possibly purchase .22 rimfire ammo. I have a couple thousand rounds left for when my kids are home from college.

I have substituted shooting reloaded .38 special ammo out of my revolvers at the range. Now the problem is pistol powder. I can get bulk bullets, both plated and lead. Once my stash of Unique and Accurate #2 powders are gone, I'm going to take up throwing rocks.

Back in April I purchased a 1400 rnd pail of .22lr online from Natchezss for .07/rnd including shipping. I get notifications from the Ammo thread in the 15-22 forum. My job is flexible enough to be able to respond. (Besides I'm the boss!) I have seen lots of .22lr recently for .10 shipped, but thats more than I am willing to spend. If I didn't have any to shoot that might be different.

Glad to see it's not talked about much. It's been talked to death. I usually don't read .22lr threads and only read the first post.

I would like to own a few 22 rimfire firearms, at least a rifle and handgun of some type. But since there is seldom any 22 ammo available locally, I see no reason to buy either.

The last 22 ammo I saw for sale was $6.99/50 or $13.99/100 and that was the cheapest! I've seen prices as high as $19.99/50 locally and I just walked away shaking my head.

As others have stated, I can reload my centerfire pistol rounds cheaper than that; so that's what I do. I don't look for 22 ammo anymore and won't even ask about it at WM-whose ammo case has become bare again, after the clerk telling me a few months ago that ammo was becoming more available and would soon be on the shelves. Hmmm, wonder what happened there?

WATCHDOG- Is there a point to your comments?

ladyT- Some consider gouging, profiteering, exploitation of emergency circumstances, etc to be capitalism. I do not.

I haven't bought any .22 ammo in 2 years. I refuse to participate in the madness. I'll hand load center fire instead. I hear people to me how they buy it at walmart and sell it at auctions for inflated prices and idiots buy it.They can have it.

I am new to shooting, after a 20yr break. Decided June 2013 that a S&W 15-22 was my choice. Realizing 22lr was non existant, and despite my brother says don't do it. I decided I would get 3000 rds of ammo before buying the gun. By Dec 15th I had 3000rds (approx. .10 rd) Gun purchased 12/31/2013. I figured I needed 7000 more rds. Jan-April, I got 20,000 more rds ( .07 rd average) After shooting in April, I realized 1000 rds a month is more real. I have since passed on appox 10,000 rds. Some were less than 5 cents a round. I also sold all Remington and Winchester ammo, but kept the CCI and Fed. I was blocked from selling on armslist by a bunch of locals. Every time I put up 22lr at any price, it was flagged as spam or overpriced (.05 cents a round) So I was forced to put it on gunbroker and made a windfall. I think a lot of this shortage is people refusing to pay more than 5-6 cents a round. Right now .10/rd is the market, I think it will settle at.07-.08/rd, and that's the price you all have to choose. I am all in at that. 1 person in 20 is a millionare in this country. Look at gas prices ($3.25/ gal sounds cheap)
