There are no dumb questions...just dumb answers sometimes.
I do admit I'm a bit confused about your description, and perhaps it's just a matter of clearing up some terminology. When you say she pushed a button near the chamber, my first thought was that maybe she pushed the striker block on the slide...but then your picture shows the recoil rod at the crown. The terminology as I've always understood it is, the chamber is that part of the barrel where the rounds go in...the muzzle or crown is the end of the barrel where the rounds come out. (Sorry...trying to be basic here...no offense intended.) Some people get hung up on terms, but it does help when describing a problem.
I'm going to attach a video from Apex Tactical which shows their disassembly and spring install process...the video is good to show how you can detail strip the slide, and clean out the striker channel, which you need to do on occasion. You won't need to do all the things shown on the video, unless you are actually going to install the Apex kit...like, you won't need to knock out any pins, remove the extractor, etc.
