For those that wish S&W would make a .45 Colt mountain gun (or even just a 4" in .45 Colt), I think I found a close alternative in the 4" 45 acp guns (still currently being produced).
Buffalo Bore is making both .45 Super and .45 Auto Rim +P loads pushing a 255 gr. H.C. F.N. at over 1,000 fps or a 200 gr. Jacketed Hollow Point at 1,200 fps out of a 4" smith. Even their .45acp +p rounds pushes the 255 gr. H.C. F.N. at over 900 fps.
This is close to John Linebaughs' day in and day out packing load of a 260 gr. Keith bullet traveling about 900 fps that he carries in his 25-5.
As much as I like the idea of the .45 colt +p Ruger only load, the S&W wasn't really designed to handle it. And probably isn't needed in most trail gun situations as pointed out in the article below.
Gunnotes...Smith & Wesson Mod 25-5
So if you like a big .45 round and can't find a .45 Colt S&W, the .45 acp version may fill your needs.
