For those that wish S&W would make a .45 Colt mountain gun (or even just a 4" in .45 Colt), I think I found a close alternative in the 4" 45 acp guns (still currently being produced).

Buffalo Bore is making both .45 Super and .45 Auto Rim +P loads pushing a 255 gr. H.C. F.N. at over 1,000 fps or a 200 gr. Jacketed Hollow Point at 1,200 fps out of a 4" smith. Even their .45acp +p rounds pushes the 255 gr. H.C. F.N. at over 900 fps.

This is close to John Linebaughs' day in and day out packing load of a 260 gr. Keith bullet traveling about 900 fps that he carries in his 25-5.

As much as I like the idea of the .45 colt +p Ruger only load, the S&W wasn't really designed to handle it. And probably isn't needed in most trail gun situations as pointed out in the article below.

Gunnotes...Smith & Wesson Mod 25-5

So if you like a big .45 round and can't find a .45 Colt S&W, the .45 acp version may fill your needs.

While I really like the idea of +P Auto Rim rounds, and my 625 would love them. I am cautious to keep them for fear of my sons using them in my 1917 or one of their converted Webleys. I already believe the 1917 makes a great back woods gun with standard velocity lead RN or Lead HP bullets. I know I am unusual in this but, I like a lanyard on my woods guns, they have stayed with me in some nasty situations canoeing and kayaking and the official Mountain Guns don't have them When I was in my 20's and 30's I carried a 1911 in the woods, Now days the Rangers and hikers smirk at the old man with the old gun- Let'em smirk.
