Weak recoil spring?

So I have a new 40 compact. 400 rounds old. After about thirty rounds on two different outings now, the slide feels like it is about to fly off the back of the gun and hit me in the face. I shoot the full size and shield just fine. This is very bothersome. Is this a weak recoil spring or is this just because of the pressure of the 40 on a shorter guide rod?

How are you ascertaining that the slide is about to fly off the gun? How does it feel to rack the slide? If it feels "normal" during racking the slide, and the recoil spring will pull the slide forward and load a round from the magazine, I'm sure that the spring is fine.

You may consider bringing it to a gun shop to compare with another gun to see if they feel about the same.

So me and the wife went back out to the range. I have just recently changed the backstrap to the large size. The recoil felt so much better. No feeling as if the slide was flying off. Not sure why I didn't think of it before. I shoot my full size with the large strap on. It made a world of difference.

Wait? What?

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I use the small back straps WITH both my .40's. I don't perceive any difference with slides, other than the .40c is a little more snappy.

My hands fit better with the large. Allows for a better grip, better control.
