Thinking about trading Shield for SW1911SC for EDC

Do all the folks commenting about weight realize that the OP is talking about a 1911SC, which has an alloy frame and weighs about 28 ounces, which is about the same as most polymer framed guns?
I bought a 4.75" 1911SC with the bobtailed grip frame and it's a nice carry gun. Recoil is stouter than with a steel-framed 1911, and a little stouter than with a polymer framed gun IMO, possibly because the alloy frame doesn't flex and absorb recoil like a polymer frame. The magazines that came with it were garbage, but it runs 100% with Wilson mags. The only thing I don't like about the gun is how much it cost me :D

While this is a S&W forum, my current carry piece is a Rock Island compact 45. All steel, it weighs 2.16 lbs empty. I'm not a big guy, but I do not find it heavy. It was $400, & I'm very pleased with how well it works. No problem with the factory mag. GARY

With Shields in plentiful supply and selling new for $330, I'm keeping all of mine. They are still nice little guns. I haven't received my SW1911SC yet, but I'm hoping the curved butt and 8 round grip make it my new favorite EDC.

The SC weighs the same as a 4513, but has a longer grip which is part of the reason I ordered one. If I don't carry it I'll still enjoy shooting it anyway!

And who has ever had too many guns??? :p

I wouldnt give my shield up for any of my 1911's as far as an EDC. And trust me i have a bunch of those 1911's lol. I do carry a few of my Kimbers from time to time. However, i dont care them 12+hrs a day like i do my Shield. Actually, i cant even come close to carrying any of my 1911's for near that long. And thats including my colt defenders as well as my kimber UC's. A full size 5" 1911, couldnt even come close to comparing. So as far as EDC, the Shield wins hands down.

Now if u want to start taking them to the range. The Shield cant hold a flame to some of my 1911's.

Agreed. I chose an Ed Brown over Kimber, andI love the 1911 at the range - nothing shoots better. But for EDC, the Shield 9mm is more than adequate and surely accurate enough for SD shooting.

I wouldn't probably SWAP permanently a Shield for a 1911, certainly not me because I am 5'8" 140lbs, just not able to hide a 1911. But once in a while, why not? It's a beautiful gun , and a particularly beautiful version. But that makes such a waste of quite possibly the most perfect CCW gun on the market (in the M&P Shield).

You just need to find the right holster. I'm only 5'7" and 145 lbs myself but have no problem concealing my full sized M&P40 which is thicker than a 1911 and at least as big as a standard 1911 in overall length & height. I use either a home made Kydex IWB scabbard or an Old Faithful IWB hi-bread along with a good quality heavy leather belt.

I'm curious. If you don't like plastic framed guns, why are you reading the M&P forum? Closet fan?

The title had 1911sc in it. I didn't realize it was plastic forum or I would not have read it.

Ah, but it is in the "plastic gun" forum. Therefore, I conclude that you really want one and just aren't willing to admit it yet! ;)

(You know we're just having fun here, right? All are welcome and it's fun to debate. I'm a 1911 fan, but have my share of polymer guns as well.)

I find this curious. Not picking on you Protected One, but picked this because several have said it.

I carry because I might need to defend my life one day. If my life is on the line, I want the best tool I can get my hands on; the one I shoot best with. Don't you? And, yes, I carry my Ed Brown.

Carry is a very personal thing. Lay three hand guns out, which one do you instinctively grab as you go out the door? Which one do you shoot the best?

A carry gun isn't worth much if 1. you don't carry it, 2. you can't deploy and shoot it effectively. Shield or 1911 or whatever, is irrelevant if you don't answer yes to these two questions.

I have a Glock 30SF that I shoot very, very well, creating a similar dilemma for me, so I carry the one that's appropriate to the attire

Good Luck with your choice, and good shooting. :D

All good points, probably going to hang onto the Shield and just buy the SC, and have both. I could say the SC would be my "winter carry" gun, but that would only amount to about 2 weeks out of the year :D

The OP seems well aware of their respective qualities , and tradeoffs involved. If he Wants to carry the 1911SC , no reason he can't.

Generally , on the various foroums I visit , I use the "new posts" feature, and they look at the title of the threads , and pay little attention to the sub foroum where it is posted.

Great Minds! :D

78Staff, is that the two weeks around Christmas or the two weeks around New Years? My wife's been trying to convince me to go on a cruise, but I don't want to come down during the "cold weather".

Hah Christmas and New Years is generally shorts weather still. we don't get really cold until late Jan/early Feb. And by really cold, of course I mean 30* lol...

OK..................

I get what he's saying, the "new posts" is just that, a list of the new posts from various sub-forums since last login, not necessarily grouped by sub-forum. So I can see how it would be easy to see a thread titled "SW1911SC blah blah blah" and not realize it was in the M&P section.

I actually struggled in deciding if I should post this thread in the M&P or Semi-Auto sections, to be honest - but figured since I was comparing to the Shield for EDC I would go with it here...

I used to bring the kids down to visit grandpa and go to Disney World every other year. The cheapest prices are always around the end of Jan beginning of Feb so that's when we'd always go.

I have pictures of the kids swimming in the pool while the lifeguards wear parkas with hoods on. I believe the temps were down to a blustery 56 degrees then.

'Winter' in Florida is a little different than what we are used to! :p

Don't pay attention to anyone complaining about where you post whatever. The mods will move it if it needs moving. :)

I'm happy to see you have some nice hardware and you're posting up about it so we can discuss it!

Carry on! ;)
