Thinking about trading Shield for SW1911SC for EDC

Carry is a very personal thing. Lay three hand guns out, which one do you instinctively grab as you go out the door? Which one do you shoot the best?

A carry gun isn't worth much if 1. you don't carry it, 2. you can't deploy and shoot it effectively. Shield or 1911 or whatever, is irrelevant if you don't answer yes to these two questions.

I have a Glock 30SF that I shoot very, very well, creating a similar dilemma for me, so I carry the one that's appropriate to the attire

All good points, probably going to hang onto the Shield and just buy the SC, and have both. I could say the SC would be my "winter carry" gun, but that would only amount to about 2 weeks out of the year

The OP seems well aware of their respective qualities , and tradeoffs involved. If he Wants to carry the 1911SC , no reason he can't.

Generally , on the various foroums I visit , I use the "new posts" feature, and they look at the title of the threads , and pay little attention to the sub foroum where it is posted.

Hah Christmas and New Years is generally shorts weather still. we don't get really cold until late Jan/early Feb. And by really cold, of course I mean 30* lol...

I get what he's saying, the "new posts" is just that, a list of the new posts from various sub-forums since last login, not necessarily grouped by sub-forum. So I can see how it would be easy to see a thread titled "SW1911SC blah blah blah" and not realize it was in the M&P section.

I actually struggled in deciding if I should post this thread in the M&P or Semi-Auto sections, to be honest - but figured since I was comparing to the Shield for EDC I would go with it here...

I used to bring the kids down to visit grandpa and go to Disney World every other year. The cheapest prices are always around the end of Jan beginning of Feb so that's when we'd always go.

I have pictures of the kids swimming in the pool while the lifeguards wear parkas with hoods on. I believe the temps were down to a blustery 56 degrees then.

'Winter' in Florida is a little different than what we are used to!

Funny. I've lived in Ft. Lauderdale, & Palm Beach for years. Whenever it gets cool in the winters, the only people at the beach are the Canadians. While it may be too cool for us to go swimming, they just left sub zero weather, so 50 seems like 92 to them. LOL. GARY

I can understand why the OP wants a 1911 style sidearm. They are unique in design and time proven for reliability. I was weaned on 1911s, and recently found myself giving some serious thought to selling the Shield and going back to my Colt Officers Model. After a few days of lugging the extra weight around (I do notice a difference), I decided to go another route. I have two Springfields on order: a .45 and a 9mm, both in the EMP line. There's something inherently attractive about the design and function of a 1911. I guess time, and a few hundred rounds, will tell if I really want to keep the Shield or not.

I enjoy carrying my either my G30 or my S&W 40c in an IWB clip-on kydex holster. However, I wear the holster between my belt and pants at about 3:30/4:00. It conceals easily under a t-shirt or un-tucked shirt. I understand the concerns about weight but my 1st priority is how well I deploy and shoot the weapon. If my weapon drags my pants (usually shorts) down I simply tighten my belt a notch and that takes care of it. With tritium Big Dot sights on my G30 I can usually empty all rounds into a jagged hole at 10 yds. The same is true of my 40c.

I really like the S&W 1911 commercial platform but have found it to be somewhat 'high maintenance'. My G30 or S&W 40c can take a lot of abuse, if necessary, and I'm not at all concerned about their reliability. I really appreciate not having to be concerned about any levers, buttons, or switches when drawing & firing. My son now has my S&W stainless 1911 5" and uses it at the range. I'm soon to be 71 and that is what works for me. YMMV

I've got a PC1911 (pretty much the same gun as the sc) that I carry all the time. It weighs 38 oz loaded with 9 230 gr cartridges. I carry it in a Galico king tuck holster with a good gun belt, and it is very comfortable to ware. This holster distributes the weight of the pistol very well, and keeps it very close to my body. I just ware an untucked shirt and I'm good to go. I am not a big guy, just tall and thin. I think as long as you have a good holster/belt combo and dress appropriately you'll have no problems. The bob tail grip really helps with printing as well and is really comfortable to shoot too.

From personal experience...I would recommend that if you can keep the Shield and get the 1911 as an additon, then do it. I found my 1911SC E-Series just a little too large for concealed carry. I don't mind the occasional printing, but it just never felt as concealed as my Shield. I really liked my SC, but I just decided to sell it to fund a CCO sized 1911.

The 1911SC is considerably heavier than the Shield. But not difficult to manage. It may shoot a little snappier than your all steel 1911.

I have 1911s, revolvers, and a shield, all are too heavy for me to carry on my person every day, all day. I guess I am not that afraid, but I could carry my little lcp, but dont most of the time.

With Shields in plentiful supply and selling new for $330, I'm keeping all of mine. They are still nice little guns. I haven't received my SW1911SC yet, but I'm hoping the curved butt and 8 round grip make it my new favorite EDC.

The SC weighs the same as a 4513, but has a longer grip which is part of the reason I ordered one. If I don't carry it I'll still enjoy shooting it anyway!

And who has ever had too many guns???

You will not be disappointed. Fit and finish are excellent, trigger feels great, I love the grip. You will feel like this should be a much more expensive gun. BUT I would not get rid of the SHield. You won't get much for it and it's always good to have a smaller gun for discrete carry. The SC weighs 29oz but FEELS lighter in your hand. But it is still a lot larger than your SHield.

I say keep em both a while and if you find your good with carrying the SC all year, then drop the SHield.
