Growing up my dad called ammunition shells, in the Air Force it was small arms rounds, my wife call them bullets. I call it ammo. So what do you call the stuff you shoot out of your firearm?

I suspect the younger crowd who insist on calling Revolvers "wheelies" call cartridges "whizbangs" or "zingers" or something equally annoying to those of us who believe that using the proper term for something is correct.
Whiz-Bang was a brand of .22 cartridges made by CIL (Canadian Industries Limited).
They also had a brand named Canuck... Eh? ;)

Zingers were chemical cake treats made by Hostess.

Now I'm hungry and I want to shoot something! :p

Wheelies are best done on an old Schwinn!

I vote: ammo, cartridge, round, shell, projectile or bullet depending on the context and try to call a spade a spade.

Ammo or rounds. Two or more rounds is ammo. To me, a round can be singular, but there is no such thing as one ammo. Could be one round of ammo tho. Ammo is a collection of rounds. You can buy a box of rounds or a box of ammo. You can buy 50 rounds, but not 50 ammos. You can buy a box of bullets, but that's not ammo or rounds.

What's wrong with me

I use the words ammo, ammunition, cases, brass, bullets, and cartridges, all in their correct applications. Shells are either shotgun cartridges (what the army calls 'em), or the explosive projectiles for naval or field artillery. Those are not bullets. Cartridges contain bullets, but they are not synonymous. I seldom use the word rounds unless discussing the number of cartridges in a box or lot. Empty cases, new or fired, or bullets are never rounds.

my grandpa shotgun shells just shells

he called rifle and handgun ammunition by its caliber

I call it by its caliber and use the word ammunition. for example .38 special ammunition.

If I'm referring to reloading (which is where this question is being posed), I will tell someone, "I'm going to load some [caliber] ammo today". When finished, I will tell said person, "I reloaded XXX rounds of ammo today"

Take off Hoser! I call them ammo, I've heard the term "Shells" used.
