Walther PPK/S Replacement

My current EDC weapon is a Walther PPK/S, .380. Several reasons, but, mostly I really like the SA/DA versatility. I like the "safety" factor of having the first round DA and the ease of all follow up shots being SA. I also like the exposed hammer and its ability to make the first round SA if time and desire permit. Its size and weight are ideal and very easy to conceal.

Now the question: If I wanted to step up to a 9mm with all of the same features/benefits of my Walther that I really like, what would you recommend?

Open sheet of paper, no pre-conceived notions other than I wouldn't carry a KelTec if it was the last gun on earth. (Very long story)

So, what say you?

Too many good choices...

P239s are awsome and in current production.

The 3913/14 are bit smaller and out of production, but mags are still on the market, with holster options aplently if you use a small custom maker like Lobo.

I also have an exceptional 92 Compact Type M, but they are very rare and extra mags are coveted.

Whatever you do, DONT make the mistake of falling for the poly/striker gun hype.

Hunter I like the way you think........the 92 Compact M were brought into the US for 15-18 years ( about 84- into the late 90s/ early 2000s) but never caught on..... everyone wanted 15+ round "Wonder 9s"........ they are highly sought after over on the Beretta Forum....IIRC they are selling in the $700-850 range. Magazines are scarce.... often going for $50-60..... but they are great guns.

If I didn't have my 3913/14s it would be my primary cc gun..... while larger than the Smith it's about the size of a Colt Commander...... it gets a fair amount of carry Sept - late spring in casual clothing.

Never had a Sig 239 given that I already had the Smiths and Berettas when the 239 was introduced ...... but at about the same size I've got the Sig 245 in .45acp...... a cut down 220 with 3.9" barrel and 6 round magazine ( 8 w/ Sigs X-grips)...If I need/want a cc .45 it's my go to gun.

OP/Voyager .... the 245 or newer 220 Compact would be a good option if you want a .45.

An "I wish gun" would be a FrankinSmith........ 4566 upper over a 4513 frame with flush fit 6 round magazine.

I managed to find mine on consignment at the LGS last year. It was probably unfired, with two mags for $425. Needless to say, I hurt my arm pulling out my wallet so fast. Mine has the early 92 style round trigger guard which is very cool.

The single stack 9mm is a great step-up for OWB carry.

Is yours an S or F? I've got 2 early Ms with round trigger guards, bright bluing (not the later bruton finish) and wood grips...... got them both at a LGS ..... got to be 15 years ago..... $300 and $325 and each had 3 or 4 magazines with them....... they were so dusty they looked like Bruton from the other side of the counter.....LOL...... they were doing the paper work so fast..... I think they were afraid I would change my mind about buying these dogs!!!!!

Beautiful Guns........ BBQ quality!!

92fs compact

While we're on this topic,, does anyone have any experience going to a Beretta 92fs compact. I haven't found one to handle. I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile buying one of those to carry instead of my full sized Beretta 92fs. Is the reduction in size worth the cost of another gun I guess is my questions?

I've had a Compact since 1988...... so yes........ it's the best ..... compact ... that's really a full size gun....... I've ever owned......

Colt Commander size ......13 +1.....

The best Beretta 92 is the Centurion ........15/18 +1 with a 4.25" barrel.....

You might look at an H&K USP compact……comes in 9mm, .40, and .45, DA/SA, hammer fired……I've got it in .40, and really like it.

Semper Fi!

I vote for the 3913/14 (you would need to change out the hammer.) or the SIG P239.

If you don't mind double stack, the 6906, CZ PO-1 or RAMI.

Since you're open minded you might wanna consider one of these.

I was so impressed with the ergomomics, reliability and handling of the Taurus PT-111 G2 that I bought a second one.

They are about the same size and weight as the S&W Shield but with a bigger payload.

3.5" barrel, 21 oz's, 1.2" thick, 12+1 rd. capacity, loaded chamber indicator, manual safety, quick (GLOCK clonned) disassembly, fully adjustable sights...and a double strike capability.

While I love my CZ 85 if you want something with similar features to the PPK series (ie fame mounted decock and DA/SA trigger) consider the S&W Model 439 / 639 9 shot single stacks, or if you want more rounds the 659 and 669 double stacks are 14 shots.

If you wont be carrying it the Walther P-1 (P-38) is very similar to the PPK and available fairly cheap, Also the walther P-5 and P-88 series pistols are interesting but becoming expensive and exotic collectables.
