Something I hear a lot from the pro gun control crowd is “why do you need a gun at (wherever you happen to be going).”
It’s never been a case of “needing” gun at whatever specific location it’s simply that when I got my permit I just made it a rule to carry every where I’m legally able to and that given location just happened to be on my list of places I had to go that day.

To me there’s more worrying about “what if?’ involved with only carrying some times. Why carry some times and not others? What is it about whatever you’re doing now that makes it so inherently dangerous that you feel the need to carry this time? If it’s so dangerous that you feel you need a gun why are you doing it?

To me, carrying a gun is like wearing a seat belt; I put my seat belt on every time I get in the car even if I’m only moving the car from one spot to the other. Similarly, unless I’m going somewhere where I am legally prohibited from carrying a firearm I carry. Doesn’t matter if I’m going to the laundry room in the basement or California I don’t walk out my door with a gun any more than I walk out the door with out my house keys, wallet or cell phone.

My favorite answer, which im sure I stole from someone on here, is because I cannot carry a cop. I then offer to take them shooting, provided I know them. I have converted quite a few over the years. If they do not convert at least I tried.

my answer is because i cannot control when and where bad people will decide to do very bad things. which usually incites a question along the lines of "but what if they get the jump on you?" i answer with "i may still be a victim, but i won't be an easy victim"

my mother asks me why i carry a gun. i ask her why she has pepper spray on her keychain and another in the console of her car.

I've had my Concealed Carry permit since getting out of Law School 37 years ago....I originally got it so I could carry more discreetly while hiking in the Allegheny mountains and at the cabin.

Unfortunately, today I also feel the need to carry to protect my wife and boys...... it's a strange, strange world we live in today....a life time away from growing up in the 50s and 60s.

I also carry a cell phone, small flashlight, pocket knife, extra car key; Auto, Fire & Liability Insurance, a spare tire and jumper cables in each car............... even keep a emergency kit/get home bag in my car...........

Over the years the flashlight has gotten the most use ....... my 3913 the least.

I've never been able to predict..... when I would need any of the items listed above. Life would be so much simpler/ not to mention lighter if I could only predict the future......

This is one of the most frightening questions I am ever asked. The person may be buying a CCW gun "explaining" that they will not carry it everywhere only when "needed". Why this is scary is that this person is "pro" gun, "pro" 2nd amendment, yet is trying to justify buying/carrying a weapon for self protection. Unfortunately I believe that this person is 1 or 2 steps away from voting for "common" sense gun laws, convincing themselves that there are places where they should "not" carry, which puts them 1 step away from deciding that I should also not carry "there". Common sense is eroding faster by the day and it carries over to every aspect of our lives. Many "pro" gun people do not understand why I should have a Machine gun, the next group does not understand why I should have a semi auto rifle, the next does not understand why I should have a pump, etc, etc. Reality is that "gun" laws have little to no "effect" on gun owners. Yes you fill out the paper, background check, etc, but with out them you have no plan on committing any illegal act any way. Common sense would tell you that carrying a gun does not make you dangerous, but guessing on which day to carry could be dangerous to you. So we need to educate people, since I do not believe you can teach common sense!! Be Safe,

My typical answer is...
"If I knew where I was going to "need" it, I would just not go there."
OR
It's called the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Needs

Either way it gets them thinking.

Those who ask questions like that believe you can predict where you might "need" a gun. I hope to never need one again but I feel a responsibility to protect those I love from harm.

We carry because we "MIGHT" need one today.

If we "KNEW" we needed one today, we'd stay home.

The same holds true with parachutes and fire extinguishers...;)

The urban area I moved out of was loaded with people like that. Most of them did not like the idea that off duty or retired LEOs carry so you could imagine what they thought of regular citizens exercising their rights! Your best bet is to keep a low profile and make sure your carry piece does not print or otherwise give you away!

I try to duck questions like that but when I do answer tend to say because a cop is too hard to carry.

The trouble is, every time a business starts prohibiting private citizens carrying a gun, they are just setting themselves up for trouble -- creating a safe area for bad guys.

I have a very liberal friend who makes it a point of saying that she will not allow any guns in her house. She doesn't know I have a CC license, and I don't intend to tell her. I've respected her wishes and never brought a gun to her house, but I bet if something happened she would be happy there was a good guy with a weapon visiting her.

Why do you have fire insurance? Are you planning on having a fire?

THIS is it in a nutshell.

I wrote a paper during my Administration of Justice major and got a "A" on it, entitled "Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it."

Many good drivers in smaller communities especially, can drive their entire lives without having an accident. But most would be aghast at the idea of dropping their auto insurance. Same for household insurance as mentioned above...
